You agreed with me last Thursday as to the advisability of having some simple Memorandum of Agree ment signed by the various manufacturers who agreed to participate in the underwriting of Dr. Gardner's experi ments. I have, accordingly, prepared and am enclosing herewith a copy of such memorandum, which has been signed by Johns-Manville Corporation. I believe it was your idea to have Mr. Schluter of Ihermoid obtain the signatures of the other participating companies and, accordingly, , would suggest that you sign on behalf of your Company and forward to him for further handling with the others. I think it might be well, also, for you to suggest that as many signatures as possible be obtained before it is sent to Gatke or to Union Asbestos & Rubber Company. Those companies may be more inclined to go along if they have tangible evidence that numerous other companies are participating. Ky thought was that we would have only one originai which would eventually be returned to me and that I would then have photostatic copies made for each of the participating companies. Gardner at the Saranac Laboratory, Saranac Lake, Hew York. The general nature of these experiments and the cost thereof were explained at the meeting of certain brake lining manufacturers held in New York City on November 19, 1936.* The purpose of this memorandum is to confirm the agreement between the Undersigned to underwrite the cost of these experiments amounting to 5,000 per year for a period of three (3) years, or a total of $15*000. The Undersigned agree to share equally the costs of said experiments. For example, if ten parties sign this Agreement* the annual contribution of each will be $500. Zt may be more or less, depending on whether the number of those signing is more or less than ten. Simpson, (President, Haybestos-Manhattan, Inc., Bridgeport, Connecticut. Dear Mr. Simpson: I wish to acknov/ledge receipt of your interesting letter of September 27th. i 1 have heard nothing from Or. Gardner concerning I hisexperience with the asbestos sample sent hlm~b^_the Harvard College Laboratory which, unon infection, caused immediate death of theexperimental animals. I agree with you that this sounds strange. The sample in question oust have come from Hussia, which I am sure you will agree ex~ ports poison in a variety of forms. Anyhow, I trust it wasn*t from Canada. In regard to the copy of your letter from Dr. Hyde, referring to the work being done by certain people' with aluminum dust as a counter-agent to free silica, I be lieve you will be interested in knowing that these experiments were conducted by two Canadian doctors and a metallurgical engineer. A preliminary report on the subject was presented before the Academy of Medicine at Toronto on June 15, 1937 and printed in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. If you or anyone in your company is interested, you can obtain a reprint of this report from Air Hygiene Foundation.
