B., addressed to our branch office in Toronto, with regard to a suit brought against the Irving Oil Company, Limited for illness to a child and the death of a horse alleged to have been caused by seepage of Ethyl Gasoline into a well. We thought it best to refer the questions to you for answer and would thank you to please let us have a copy of your reply to them in due course in order to complete our files. Dear Sirs:- We are acting for Irving Oil Company, Limited, in connection with a suit brought against it for alleged contamination of a well due to seepage from a leak in the connection of a tank containing Ethyl gasoline. Among the damage claimed is the death of a horse and the illness of a child who developed a cankered mouth and throat. While we believe the well was contaminated from other sources we have to meet the fact that there was a slight drip in the connection of the gasoline tank situated some 500 yards away. Have you any information or text book that would be of assis tance to us in building up a defence. What we had in mind was - (1) Information as to the poisonous qualities of Tetra-Ethyl lead; (2) The quantity of poison usually-contained in a gallon of treated gasoline; (3) Whether the lead would remain in compound with the gasoline or would leave it and become soluble in water; (4) The quantity necessary to be harmful to man or beast; (5) The nature of the action, if harmful. Would the action be that of a corrosive poison effecting the ruouth and gullet or would it follow more the lines of ordinary lead poisoning such as ''painters colic". .
