Schroeder, Davenport CONFIDENTIAL RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING NOVEMBER - DECEMBER. 1964_______________ The November and December meetings of the Industrial Hygiene Committee were combined into a single meeting held in the private dining room of the Main Cafeteria December 22, 1964 at 12:30 p.m. Those in attendance were tit* Messrs. G. J. Myers, Ron Small, W. C.,,Harvey, B. D. Kent, J. T. Hobbs, Jr., R. G. Wardrop, K. W. Williams, D. E. Schroeder, and Dr. Shafer. Complaints of nausea and headaches in the shear room area were investigated and findings indicated a slight carbon monoxide build up due to a negative building pressure, the exhaust fans being off for the cold weather and leaking door seals on the 1, 2, and 3 Drever C.A. furnaces. Mr. Myers will investigate the door seals further. At the request of Mr. George Hayes the atmosphere in truck vans during loading was checked for carbon monoxide to determine the effective ness of the catalytic filters after approximately 1 year use. In the uture only trucks equipped with catalytic filters should be employed in loading truck vans. A report indicating the treatment of the alodine waste has been complied with. The sulfur dioxide created in the treatment is still a problem due to the method of mixing the neutralizer and the waste material with air. A dilution method is being tried and if this is unsuccessful another mixing method will be necessary. The committee is again cautioned that all correspondence should be labeled confidential on the correspondence as well as on the sealed envelope carrying it. Sunethane a solvent for cleaning of electrical equipment was investi gated and found to be safe to use in this respect with caution given to adequate protection from direct skin contact. Mr. J. M. Bales who requested the information has been informed of the findings. The installation of the exhaust system for sawing marinite is to be completed by the end of January. The coating of the No. 2 scalper ducts will be completed January 9 and 10. A report on a noise level survey in the slitter area indicated an un safe range. Because of the large area a more detailed survey is to be made. More study will be given to the problem after completion of the survey. The newspaper article concerning asbestos as a possible cause of lung cancer was investigated and asbestos in this respect is no problem at Davenport. The Chemical Laboratory will survey the area on a routine basis in the month of January. Vith regard to the problem of potential heat exhaustion for employees working in warm furnaces, the Vortex unit will be evaluated as a means for cooling workers in place of or supplementary to man cooler fans. The committee accepts Dr. M. 0. Colwell's suggestion that he send out Mr. George Farrah of ARL to demonstrate a Vortex man cooler. Arrangements will be made by Mr. B. D. Kent. Dr. Shafer gave a very favorable report on recent bacteria yeast and mold counts made in the Foil Mill. In light of this information a recent complaint of a customer for mold contamination on cream cheese wrappers did not originate in the Davenport Foil Mill. An employee who claimed he was allergic to marinite dust was given a patch test with no reaction and to the satisfaction of the employee. In opening drums of Hexane the Foil Mill was concerned about the action to be taken in event Hexane is splashed in an employee's eye*.
