Box 403 Niagara Falls, New York Dear Doctor Eddy: Thank you for your letter of inquiry of October 11 with regard to the possibility of a clarifying statement about abrasives # to amplify a sentence to which you objected in the Council's document "The Pneumoconioses-- Diagnosis, Evaluation and Manage ment" published in the August 1963 issue of the Aronives of Environmental Health. This matter was taken up for discussion in the m^toxng of the Council on Occupational Health held at San Francisco, California, on September 22, 1963. After discussion th,~ Council voted "that the Council on Occupational Health support _r. Wright's recommendation that the Guide remain as initially produna-i and that a clarification statement should be sent in a .ect^r written by Dr. Mayer to Dr. Eddy." This action of the Council was taken with respect to the recommendations made in the next to the last paragraph in a letter written by Dr. George W. Wright, a member of the former Committee on the Pneumoconioses, to you (Dr. Eddy) on September 4, 1963. If you will refer back to this letter, you will understand the intent of the Council's action. The pertinent portion of that letter is as follows: 0005405 G. P. Eddy, M.D. -- 2 October 16, 1963 "I wonder if a letter from you to Dr. Mayer and a return from Dr. Mayer indicating his agreement as regards to free crystalline silica wouldn't be all that you need. Perhaps Dr. Mayer might even agree in writing to let this be used as part of the record in any of those cases that are subsequently brought to a hearing on the basis of this particular statement." I wrote to Dr. Mayer and the other members of the former Committee on the Pneumoconioses on October 3, 1963, informing them of the action taken by the Council. I would therefore suggest that if you will write a letter to Dr. Mayer requesting a statement to clarify this matter, he will respond with a letter to you which will provide the Carborundum Company with an appro priate clarification. I am sending copies of this letter to the members of the . former Committee on the Pneumoconioses so that all concerned will be provided with the same information. Copie,, ire also being sent to the members of the Council on Occ .national Health. Yours sincerely, HFH:ew e~^-c ft)' H e n r y H o w e i , M.D., Secretary Council on Occupational Health cc - Council on Occupational Health (Former) Committee on. Pneumoconioses 0005406
