Potential Problem
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) have filed a petition with EPA seeking the banning of any products or processes which contain or produce certain halogenated dibenzodioxins or dibenzofurans. The suggested maximum level would be 1 pp<C- Most of the petition seeks action under The Toxic Substances Control Act. MIC products effected would be tetrathal and diphenyloxide; but almost any other chlorinated aromatic material would be suspect.

Objective
Assure that MIC products continue to be acceptable in terms of their impact on users and on the environment.
Status 1. Material Safety Data Sheets receive periodic reviews and are revised as appropriate. In December, five revised MSDSfs were reprinted and five were in the graphics department for incorporation of change. In addition, 22 MSDS's are in various stages of the review process. Customers and others on our mailing list are sent copies of the revised MSDS. In addition to these mass mailings, we fill over 600 requests for specific MSDS's each month.
Status 2. How we communicate handling and health information to trans port carriers is under review throughout Monsanto. MIC is recommending that the product label be the prime means of communication since the label accompanies the product throughout its entire route to its final destination regardless of transfers en route. We recommend that Material Safety Data Sheets be sent to all bulk carriers hauling ewer highways and water. Employees of these carriers can encounter non-emergency exposure to products. Other carriers under this proposal would be sent MSDS's only on request.
Objective
Constructively influence development of environmental laws and regulations affecting our products.
Status 1. Delaware recently passed a law effectively banning the use of paradichlorobenzene (PDCB) in most bathroom deodorants. We are trying to deter mine why this ban included PDCB type uses when the overall intent was to ban chlorinated hydrocarbons as degreasing agents in septic tank type installations.
Other chlorobenzene producers share our concern. We will carefully monitor other states to have early warning of attempts to copy the Delaware law.
Status 2. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the National Wildlife
Federation (NWF) have filed a petition with EPA seeking the banning of any
products or processes which contain or produce certain halogenated dibenzodioxins
or dibenzofurans. The suggested maximum level would be 1 ppb. Most of the
petition seeks action under The Toxic Substances Control Act. MIC products
effected would be tetrathal and diphenyloxide; but almost any other chlorinated
aromatic material would be suspect.
