REP GS-08 INSULATION
DATE May 7, 1965
2 R/ ]
SUBJECT: Use of Corporate Insulation Standards
The Hydrocarbons Division Insulation Standards, GS-08 were issued in 1955 and are obsolescent because of new materials and techniques. The Corporate Standards Group has recently published a comprehensive standard (K-ll) that is,being used with success. (Due to the formation of the CentraltEngineering Department,--the K-ll Manual will not be distributed to holders of EGS Manuals at this time.) One item, aluminum jacketing needs further discussion. At the Texas City Plant, aluminum jacketing wllTEe specified over insulation on many future projects.
Aluminum jacketing for use7at Texas City will conform to the K-ll standard with the following exceptions:
1. Aluminum jacketing wilJL-be epoxy-coated on both sides of jacket. Minimum dry film thicknesses of epoxy will be:
a. Inside jacket - 0.6 mil (0.0006") colored b'r--Outside -jacket - 0.4 mil (0.0004")
2. Aluminum jacketing ,wil,l conform to the following minimum
thickness schedule: . 7" -
a. Vessels and piping below 3'-0" diameter --0.016" b. Vessels above 3'-0" diameter-0.019"
3. Banding will be aluminum unless specified otherwise.
"\
4. "Walex" as supplied by Hunter Engineering Corp., Riverside,
California, is acceptable as equal to products listed in K-ll.

1. This bulletin covers only preformed materials. Foamed in-place or sprayed materials are not yet reliable enough for general use.
2. Polyurethane deteriorates at 250F - do not use where temperatures will approach or exceed this value. Also, polyurethane does not qualify as a fireproofing material. (Can, however, be used with an outer layer of high
temperature insulation for this purpose.)
3. The following materials are acceptable with respect to quality and are non combustible: - -
