Both the promotional and research proprana of the Lead Industries Association this year are proceeding on schedule as approved* Several research projects of lntorest have been Initiated In addi tion to those research projects of long standing which are directly con nected with Association promotional program. The Technical Steering Coaoitteo has beon active and valuable in initiating research program and evaluating others. Of prim importance is a contract enterod into with Battells Memorial Institute, on recomendation of the Technical Steering Cocmlttee, for "Evaluation of Research Heeds and Formulation of a Research Frograa for the Lead Industries Association," at a cost of $20,000. The actual work on this survey was started around the ond of May and a find report la expected in November cr December. Battalia has kept in close touch with theAssociation offices through froquost visits and has issued brief >, t- monthly progress reports which have been circulated to the Technical Steer ing Comittee. A meting at Battells of tho Technical Steering Comittee r is' tentatively being arranged for the latter part of October to discuss, la a preliminary way, Battolle'a findings so fa*. \ i o Through the Cable Sheathing Task Group of tho Technical Steering l Committee, the John Robertn Co., fading Ancricm oaufacturer of lead extrusion presses, is undertaking a research program, at Its own expense, r on tlie continuous extrusion of the lead alloys commonly used for cable ! 1 sheathing. A large part of the manuscript for t Monograph on Lead, to be pub lished by the An-rican Chemical Society, i now in our hands and a recont check indicates that ouch of t} balance is either in preparation or already proparad and awaiting final qpproval. As it was found that bo o s out-of-pocket expanse would be necessary to complete the manuscript in the most authoritative manner, the Industry Development Comittee has been asked to approve an expenditure of up to t>3,000 ibr payment of aithors of certain parts and editorial assistance, with the expectation that most ; If not all of this money, will be recovorcd through rqyaltlos on the eel* of the book after publication. A Joint research project with the Navy on a red lead ship bottom paint, devolopod and tested by tho Rod Load Technical Committee, has been completed after throo years. Tho results' wero favorable to the new red lead paint in that tho perforaineo oquolled a coro expensive and difficult to manufacture Navy paint containing no red load* This test should be o good ammunition for further promotion in tho shipping and ship building industries.
