This is entirely understandable, in view of our general policy of handling materials from hospitals and practicing physicians as a first priority. I have allayed their concern in the face of their very heavy burden of current work by pointing out that there is no urgency for the completion of these analyses, which there fore can be introduced into the routine flow of analytical procedures as circumstances will permit. I think it wise to inform you of this situation for there will be an appreciable delay in the performance. We are under considerable pressure) for a number of reasons, and while there is no wish on our part to avoid this work, or to postpone it unnnecessarlly, we shall have to do it a little at a time. As I indicated previously, I believe, we are prepared to charge the cost of this work (the analysis of this batch of samples will cost us about $1400.00) against our general study of the lead problem in the coaasunity., (including industry), but if, in the course of your investigation of this problem in children, you should find appropriate access to funds for its support, it would not be amiss to include this Laboratory as a collaborator and to include the analytical costs in the over-all expense. I mention this not to suggest any lack of interest on our part in sharing in the work, but only for the purpose of keeping our operating costs as fairly allocated as may be possible. Landing Children's Hospital Cincinnati 20* (Aio Dear Doctor Landing: I send herewith the analytical results on the teeth submitted to us in January of this year and referred to in my letter of January 26th. Lacking information about the children listed in the report I have made no effort to put any interpretation upon these findings. I have inspected them and have found a very wide range of variability. This fact, in itself, is very interesting, and when viewed on the basis of our previous data, is almost certainly of significance. No doubt the background of Information on the individual teeth of the children will provide some basis for the interpretation of the data and for the practical usefulness of this analytical approach to the highly important problem of the "body burden" of lead, under a variety of conditions. There must be some valid relationship between the lead content of the teeth (the live, metabolizing tooth) and that of the skeleton. I hope that the information which comes out of the survey will throw some further light on this matter and Z shall be interested in it from this viewpoint particularly.
