' I have had th e r e s u l t s of the a n a l y s e s made on sa m p le s o f u r i n e and b l o o d o b t a i n e d from fo u r men, f o r some d a y s, I have been w a itin g t o o b ta in th e o th e r sam ples and t o com plete th e a n a ly s e s b efo re re p o rtin g the r e s u lts to you. However, s in ce t h e y h ave n o t been r e c e i v e d 3 . y e t , and s i n c e we w i l l be delayed f o r a s h o rt time in our a n a l y ti c a l program while the la b o rato ry is being painted throughout, I t seems w ise to re p o rt the r e s u lts to you. A ccordingly I am s e n d i n g you h e r e w i t h t h e a n a l y t i c a l r e s u l t s , A few words of i n t e r p r e t a t i o n a re I n d ic a te d in c o n n e ctio n with these r e s u l t s .
Three of the blood analyses
have given r e s u lts w h ic h a r o d e f ^a i te ly above the normal
l e v e l s . The o th e r
w ithin normal lim its .
I t would be i n t e r e s t i n g t o know t h e d e t a i l e d h i s t o r y o f
e x p o s u r e o f t h e s e men in r o l a t l o n t o t h e a n a l y t i c a l
f i n d i n g s , and I sh o u ld b e g l a d t o hav e t h i s in f o r m a t i o n
a t y o u r e a r l y c o n v e n i e n c e . On t h e o t h e r h a n d , i f wo may
assume t h a t th e se samples were taken w ith th e utm ost
p r e c a u t i o n a g a i n s t c o n t a m i n a t i o n , we may a c c e p t t h e f a c t
t h a t t h r e e o f t h e s e men h a v e had some r e c e n t e x p o s u r e t o
le a d compounds. The b lood l e v e l s a re n o t n e c e s s a r i l y
d a n g e r o u s l y h i g h , and y e t we h a v e s e e n symptoms o f i n
t o x i c a t i o n o c c a s i o n a l l y in c o n n e c t i o n w i t h b lo o d l e v e l s
o f th e o rd e r o f m egnitude of 0 7 m illig ra m s per 10 gram s. '
The blood Is only s l i g h t l y v a r i a b l e from hour to hour and
from day to day under s u b s ta n tia lly uniform con d ition s of
e x p o s u r e . T h e r e f 01 e we may e x p e c t t h a t t h e s e t h r e e men
have had lead exposure o f th e same o rd e r o f m agnitude.
On t h e o t h e r h a n d , t h e l e a d c o n c e n t r a t i o n in t h e b l o o d
does n o t change as prom ptly o r t o th e same d eg ree as t h a t
