This is basically what we are doing, although some changes in bag goods will be required. First, all products designed for the do-it-yourself trade, i.e, the 5-pound packages of dry products and 1-galIon Ready-Mix, will contain asbestos-free formulas. Thi3 program has been in effect and should not require any changes; however, if any plant has an inventory of these products that contains asbestos, it should be scrapped. We should use up any inventory of containers with asbestos warning labels by the use of "asbestos-free" labels to be placed over the warning on the container. Effective immediately, the only dry powder products in 25-pound or larger bags that will be sold will be casein products produced et Akron and Chicago. If you are producing any other bag goods with asbestos, you will eliminate this formula from your product line and have Tigard issue you an asbestos-free replacement formula. You can ship your remaining inventory of finished products, and we want to use the inventory of bags by the use of "asbestos-free" labels to be placed on the bags. We will continue to produce both asbestos and asbestos-free products in 4- and 5-gallon containers for applicators and work toward improvement of the asbestos-free product. Quality Problems a) Spoilage - Acme, Marietta and Akron have all experienced recent complaints with spoiled ready mix. Efforts are presently underway to determine the magnitude of the problem and to prevent further occurrence. b) Grit - Acme had some recent complaints of grit in their joint cement products. Re-occurrence of this problem has been eliminated by discontinuing the standard shear test for grit and substituting instead screen analysis for grit on all finished products. 2. Market Developments a) Asbestos free ready mix All one gallon ready mix is now asbestos tree. Five gallon asbestos free is available at all plants on a limited basis ) Competition - U.S.G. has apparently switched all production to asbestos ree formulations 3. Formula Developments An experimental lower cost asbestos free ready mix will be produced at Akron this week. The new formula has an estimated $.185 to $. 23/bucket cost savings. This has been achieved basically through raw material substitutions. We do not foresee any deterioration in working properties. 4. Raw Materials a) Tape - Due to a substantial improvement in quality, Chicago and Akron have switched back to Marco tape. b) Methocel - Methocel will be increasing in price from $1.33/lb. to $1.45/lb. October 1. We anticipate that Natrosol will have a similar increase shortly. c) Five Gallon Pails - Our pail suppliers are now in a position to supply five gallon pails with asbestos free labels.
