Long runs of insulation were removed from horizontal four inch piping. A water lance was used to wet the insulation some distance in front of the area where demolition was in progress. Demolition procedures were followed as well as was possible under the existing conditions. Results, as potential personal exposure had respirators not been worn, were 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8 fibers/cc>5 micrometers in length (see attached data sheet). The current OSHA Standard TLV is 2 fibers/cc greater than 5 micrometers in length with a ceiling level of 10 fibers. The standard refers to exposure without respiratory protection. Employees from this group have requested through Mr. Garrett that representative monitoring be performed at another location and to include the change room. Industrial Hygiene will schedule these measurements upon notification of a typical job being in progress. Two comments are offered which should be related to employees as appropriate. 1) Sampling time as required by OSHA is for 15 minute time increments. For long term jobs additional 15 minute samples may be collected. The analytical counting method normally does not permit longer sampling especially when high levels of fibers are becoming airborne. 2) Most demolition jobs generate more airborne asbestos fibers during removal of protective covering than is liberated when asbestos materials are properly wetted down. Some employees have questioned being sampled during the protective covering removal process and/or before the asbestos insulation is exposed.
