ACUTE TOXICITY TO FISH
TEST SUBSTANCE
Identity:
A mixture containing perfluorooctanesulfonate, which may also be referred to as PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FC-203S. (1Octanesulfonic acid) (CAS # 2795-39-3).
Remarks: The 3M product lot number was 3086. The test sample is FC203S (F2132-1). Current information indicates it is a mixture of 1.34% PFOS, 35% diethylene glycol butyl ether, 37.85% water, 2.66% Sultone foamer, 3% sodium octyl sulfate, 0.10% sodium lauryl sulfate, and 0.05% tolytriazole.
The following summary applies to a mixture with incompletely
characterized concentrationsof impurities. Data may nota.ccurately reflect the toxicity of the fluorochemical component of the test sample.
METHOD:
Method: U.S. EPA
Type: Acute flow-through
GLP: No
Year completed: 1988
Species: Salmo gairdneri
Supplier: Mt. Lassen Trout Farm, Red Bluff, California.
Analytical monitoring: Temperature, pH, and DO
Exposure period: 96-hours
Statistical methods: LCs values calculated using the Stephanetal.
computer program, 1978.
Test fish age: Juveniles
Length and weight: Average length = 39 mm
Average weight = 0.86 g (wet)
Loading: 0.57 g fish/L
Pretreatment: Unknown
Test conditions:
Dilution water: Blended water which is a mixture of reverse osmosis
and ABC well water.
Dilution water chemistry:
Hardness: 40 - 48 mg/L as CaCOs
Alkalinity:
44 - 56 mg/L as CaCO3
Lighting: A daily photoperiod of 16 hours light and 8 hours dark was
`maintained throughout the testing period.
`Stock and test solution preparation: The primary stock solution of 160,000 mg/L was prepared by dissolving 160 goftest material in 1 L of deionized water. Test solutions were intermittently introduced to the test vessels via a
001393
proportional diluter system with a flow rate of 1 L of test solution at an average rateof 8 times per hour. Flow-through rate: Approximately 6.4 times per day. Stabilityofthe test chemical solutions: Not noted Exposure vessels: Aquaria containing 30 L of test solution Number of replicates: 1 Numobfefirsh per replicate: 20 Number of concentrations: five plus a blank control Water chemistry during the study:
pH range (0-96 hours): 7.4 -7.8 (control exposure) 7.4 - 7.8 (400 mg/L exposure)
Temperature range (0-96 hours): 13-13 C (control exposure) 12-13 C (400 mg/L exposure)
Dissolved oxygen range (0-96 hours): 7.7- 8.9 mglL (control exposure) 7.2-9.0 mgL (400 mg/L exposure)
RESULTS
Nominal concentrations: Bk control, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/L
Element values: 96-hour LCso = >400 mg/L 96-hour NOEC = 400 mg/L
Element values based on nominal concentrations
Remarks: Testing was conducted on a mixture as described in the Test Substance Remarks field. The values reported apply to that mixture and not the fluorochemical proportion alone.
