MINUTES of the TECHNICAL h RESEARCH COMMITTEE {Chairman & Sub-Chairmen) of the NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, N, Y. February 19, 1959 Chairman R. C, Parlett called the meeting to order at 10:15 A, M, with the following in attendance: R, C. Farlett, Chairman M, W, Keyes, Chairman K, M, Ritchie^ Chairman U, W. Smith, Chairman J, Mu Barnhart Glass Section Mineral Wool Section Magnesia Section National Insulation Mfr, Assn, The purpose of the meeting was to outline in general the overall objectives and to work out a list of suggested activities for the Committee, It wa* brought to the attention of those present that the Board of Directors has asked that meetings of all the Committees would be held at times and locations other than the regular Association Meetings and that the Com mittee Chairman and the Sub-Section Chairmen were to prepare reports to be given at the regular Association Meetings, Also, that it should be arranged to hold both joint and individual Technical Si Research Com mittee meetings between the present date and the Spring Meeting to be held at Absecon, N, J,, on April 13 and 14, OVERALL OBJECTIVES ---------------- - -i It was the consensus that the following represented the overall objectives of the Committee: To promote education on proper use of thermal insulation to produce greater production efficiency, fuel saving, etc,. To encourage research on technical data pertaining to insulations and methods of application. To develop standards, test methods and specifications for insulations. 2- - Suggested activities of the Committe were agreed to be: 1. Keep abreast of new process developments; i. e,, atomic energy, etc. , and new products of users of insulation* 2. Maintain laison with major engineering and technical societies in reference to papers and assist in preparation of discussions involving insulation and its uses - societies such as ASHR&ACE, BRI, NFPA, ASMS h. AICE {Heat Transfer Section). 3. Coordinate Association members' activities concerning methods of tests and ASTM material specifications - Committee C-16 on insulation. 4* Check NIMA publicity for technical accuracy, 5, Advise Association on research projects on insulation, encourage ment or participation therein. (Such projects as those contemplated or engaged in by ASTM, ASHRStACE, Navy Yard, Aviation, Govern ment agencies, etc.). 6, Assist Secretary in answering technical inquiries from insulation users and members, 7, Assist members in preparation of insulation specifications for Government Agencies such as Military, Army, Navy, Air Force* Corps of Engineers, Department of Commerce, General Services Administration, Coast Guard, Federal Housing Authority, etc, 8, Study and report any data on general safety problems connected with with insulation uses such as toxicity, fire safety, etc. Review Underwriters1, American Gas Associations* (and others) Approval on Insulating Materials. 9, Assist in preparing technical articles on insulation for trade publications such as Materials of Engineering, Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning, Power and for handbooks such as ASHR&ACE GUIDE, Kent, Marks, etc, 1'*. 10, Study trade and technical li terature for information on effective use of insulating materials and translate for distribution to members. 3- - 11, Work with other groups developing improved methods of application of insulating materials and assurance of proper insulation workman ship, etc, 12, Contact government agencies regarding insulation problems, speci fications, etc., such as Navy, Corps of Engineers, BRAB, etc, 13, Determine the availability of reliable testing laboratories and Their facilities for the use of the members. Those present agreed, that the names of the Sub-Sections of the Committee should be changed as follows: "Mineral Wool" to "Rock U Slag" "Glass" to remain as is "Magnesia" to "Asbestos" It was the opinion that rather than the Sub-Sections function with'the Sub-Chairman and five members that for the most efficient operation of the Committee full representation from the manufacturers of each product group would be desirable, Mr, B&smhart was asked to start on the following projects as soon as possible: 1, Prepare a glossary of trade names pertaining to all types of industrial insulation products* 2, Prepare a list of members* products and the corresponding specifications that they meet, (ASTM, Federal, Military, etc.) 3, Contact the following laboratories or individuals for the purpose of determining the cost of testing, pipe, block and other forms of insulating products and to determine whether they have equipment available to test thermal conductivity from ambient to 500 F hot face temperature and from 500F to lOOO^F (or above) hot face temperature: Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory U* S. Testing Company Bowser-Morner James H. Herron Company R* H* Heilman J* L, Finck Midwest Testing It was decided that the Sub-Sections would hold their meetings in accordance with the following schedule: Mineral Wool - March 17 Magnesia - March 19 Glass - March 24 Chicago New York Pittsburgh The Minutes of the Committee Meetings and Sub-Section Committee Meet ings would be distributed to all members of the Committee as well as to the Board of Directors. It was the opinion of those present that there was not enough time to hold a full Committee Meeting between now and the scheduled Association Meeting on April i3 and l4i However, joint Committee Meetings and in dividual Sub-Section Meetings would be held after the Spring Association Meetings. f K ADJOURNMENT There being no further business The Meeting was adjourned.
