The extrusion press shown above converts electrically heated billets into large diameter, prime copper tubing or into brass rods. H&M's copper mill also includes draw benches, anneal ing furnaces, pickling and straightening facil ities, and can process 38 million pounds of copper tubing and brass shapes per year at peak capacity. 2 All components of H&M water-cooled con densers are manufactured at the Zelienople * plank Specially developed machining and braz ing equipment is used to adapt the brass headers to the double tube, counterflow design, allowing easy cleaning of the water tubes. Production capacity can reach as high as 2000 per day. .3a Another unique production tool is the Ester gang saw used for cutting cooling tower slats. This ever-hungry unit consumes one million board feet of lumber every month, processing it into decking material ready for pressure creosoting for Halstead & Mitchell cooling towers. 4a Automatic finning machines stamp out 2400 Turbu-Flo fins per hour from a continuous roll of aluminum strip. The fins are cut to size, the streamline pattern is embossed, and collars for uniform fin spacing are all provided in a single operation as the fins are fed directly on to copper tubing in lengths up to 25 feek After finning, the tubing is expanded mechanically against the fins for bonding.
