MINUTES of the TECHNICAL It RESEARCH COMMITTEE MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, N. Y. September 30, 1965 Glass Section Rock ic Slag Section The meeting was called to order at 9:15 A. M. with the following in at ance: C, E, Ernst J. Hankammer R_ Austin J. Dorsey W. Gubar \V. T. Irwin L. Lach P. L. Losse K. M. Ritchie Johns-Manville Sales Corp. Gustin-Bacon Mfg. Company Gustia-Bacon Mfg. Company Johns-Manvilhe Sale3 Corp. Gustin-Bacon Mfg. Company Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. Johns-Manville Sales Corp. The Eagle-Picher Company Baldwin-Ehret-Hill, Inc. 1. The condensation thickness tables dated 6.1, 65, with correction c minor typographical errors, were accepted for uniform presenSdfcaamy the members in sales literature. It was agreed that the 3 pcf or - k pcf table would be used in accordance with the product manufacture, and adjusted only in accordance with thicknesses produced. A note - ill be written covering the basis for the table, i. e,, method of calculation, surface resistance of 0,65 (starts with resistance ratio to new flat c r equivalent thickness and rereading of pipe thicknesses), ASHRAE k values, and a caution that for other than listed ambient conditions specific calculations must be made. 2. J. M. Barnhart reported on September 29 meeting c the Task Group on Mechanical Design of Air Duct Systems. The Task Group agreed on Mechanical Design Committee Report standard constructions for straight duct and fittings, and tentatively agreed to a method of reinforcement for rectangular ducts in accordance with spans and pressures, subject to presentation of supporting data by )-C and review by the Task Group. 3. As indicated in the Minutes of the Government Technical & Research Committee Meeting of July 14, 1965, dissatisfaction was expressed by various Government agency representative with HH-I-00553 and HH-I00559, Mineral Fiber Insulation for Elevated and Low Temperatures, which were entirely referenced to ASTM Material Specifications. This resulted in a complete rewrite of both specifications for the first time essentially in accordance with the first NIMA drafts presented. I 2 Draft copies were received for review within the wee!: before the meeting, as well as a list of eight questions presented by Messrs. Lyons and Mills of G5A for consideration by the Committee. The questions and Committee agreement on answere were as follows: 1. Compressive Strength - Compressive strength for Type I Class A would be an added improvement. NIMA should be advised as to when required. Breaking strengths are believed adequate as now included. It was agreed that members would run compression tests with 2. 5 pci preload to determine loads to 10% deflection for materials covered by Type I Class A. Results will be circulated for letter ballot prior to the next T & R meeting. 2. Rigidity Requirement - The rigidity requirements are adequately spelled out by the NIMS section 1. 2.1 which should be reinstated. 3. Facing - As this time believe that facings should be removed from spec ification (except metal-mesh covered blankets), pending review of proposed GSA facing and jacketing specification. 4. Types of Bands - This is a material specification. Section 3. 5.1. 3 should be deleted. Add reference in 6.2, Form C, Type I, whether bands are required and if required, what type. 5. Flame Spread Classification as per ASTM 84 - Yes, with maximum 25 flame spread, 50 smoke developed. 6* '?TeHl" Classifications - Change F-l to 2. 5 to 4. 5 and F-2 to 4. 5 to 6, 0 (per ASTM C-553). 7. Blanket density for pipe - minimum 1.5 pcf, product no longer available. Delete Form C, Class A, A suggestion was made that in KH-I-00558 Form A - Blocks and Boards, Rigid, Type I - Organic Bonded, Class b, be increased from 700 to 1000F maximum use temperature. After some discussion, it was agreed that 700F be retained for Classb, and that Class a, - for use up to 1000F be added. It was also agreed that Type n - Inorganic bonded, include dasssa, for use up to 1000F and Class b, for use up to 1800F. In addition, it was found that parts of the NIMA draft were reqritten, which in some cases changed the meaning or intent. These and other minor cor rections are to be reviewed with R. Lyons at a time to be arranged bf J. M. Barnhart. 3 Recommended changes in. HH-I-00545 will be held pending receipt ci draft revision. 1. ASTM C-373, Mineral Fiber Block or Board - Thermal Insulation for Lew Temperatures, was reviewed. Since the higher density products covered by this specification are no longer available, it was agreed that cancellation, be recommended. Other products which may be used are covered by C-553. 5, The need for a Military Specification for Mineral Fiber Block was discussed. P. L, Loose will submit a draft for Committee consideration. 6. J. M. Barnhart advised the Committee that they would receive copies of Insulation Systems, Feasibility Study and Development, by J, F. Boyle of the Naval Boiler and Turbine Laboratory, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Members are to review and comment to MIMA. Respectfully submitted C. E. ERNST
