TO~ Mobile Source Task Group
FROM: Richard T. Paul, Secretary DATE: September 27, 1993 SUBJECT: 1.0J.1!93 AAMA/API Meetin1 on Benzene
A ~i.al meeting of the Mobile source Task Group wlth API's Benzene Task Force ia acheduled as follows:
Thurswiy, October 7, 1993, 9:30a.m. AAMA Board Room
7430 Second Avenue, Suite -300
Detroit, MI 4820l
AAMA requested~PI consider possible collaborative efforts on improving the sc~entific
-Oasis for predicting low-dose benzene exposure and cancer risk assessment. API has for many
yean -SJ1(Jn$0red extensive benzene research projects on epidemiology, occupational exposure, _mathematical modeling for Jow-do.se, a.s well as numerous toxicity and mechanistic studies. The objective-of this meeting is to have tech:.-llcal representatives ofboth associations discuss the data, consider common goals and objectives, identify areas for possible collaboration and in general
aet to know one another.

AGENDA
2. API's BBRA Resm;h
Representatives of API, which will include lh~ technical benzene committee membm,
will describe-their biologically-based risk assessment--modeling effor'\S. Acopy of API'aconsultant draft report will serve u the basis for an interactive discussion. API-is
interested in our views on bow knowledge of biological mechanism can guide modeling.

Dr. Lee will present, in summary fashion, data on mechanisms of benzene induced pancytopenia, cbutogenic effe<;t-5 and neoplasia and- the implicatiollJ for a threshold dose effect.
4. SW;ific Area for CollaboratiQJ1
This general discussion will identify areas for possible co]aboration consistent with API'a
current and future project objectives and AAMA' s goals and effortJ on incorporation of
biological data into the mathematical model for benzene induced carcinogenesis.
