Holloway, Chairman of the Manufacturing and Mining Committee, called the meeting to order at the Drake OakBrook Hotel, Oak Brook, Illinois at 9:00 a.m. Those in attendance were: M. M. Hambrick E. R. AIR AND WATER POLLUTION Chairman Holloway briefly reviewed the Environmental Protection Agency Gypsum Industry Air Emission Study which had been conducted by Process Research, Inc., of Cincinnati, Ohio and their final report. It was noted that no E.P.A. action on the basis of this study was planned in the immediate near future. Secretary Rogers reported that he had been in contact with the Environmental Protection Agency relative to a proposed gypsum industry water study that was scheduled to commence early this year. He noted that the E.P.A. will select a contractor to conduct this study prior to May l, 197** and that the Association had offered its services to the E.P.A. relative to this study. It was the consensus of the committee that the Association's involvement in the E.P.A. water study would be of great benefit to the industry. A//24u v-s , JaXu.^ na. EX NO. JO 3 FOR ID., AS OF ? - 2 ^-^*5 ( f'/vj'' C; / 8- - 8 - UNIFORMITY OF BOARD PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION Mr. Brackett reported on this subject, noting that the Consumer Product Safety Commission will now accept our product identi fication as is. There being no further discussion on this subject, on motion unanimously carried, this item was dropped from the agenda. 9 - INDUSTRY V/ASTE PAPER SHORTAGE The committee reviewed the Association's March 10, 197** letter to Secretary Dent, U.S. Department of Commerce, and his reply letter, distributed to the committee by cover letter dated April l, 197**. On the basis of this and previous communication with the De partment of Commerce, it was the consensus that little, if any, relief to domestic paper shortages would be forthcoming until current government economic controls were relaxed. Mr. Friedlein, Traffic Committee Chairman, reported that the export of waste paper was being encouraged by proposed freight rates to the west coast from the midwest, and that his committee was recom mending to the Board that the Association actively oppose this reduc tion in rates with the Transcontinental Freight Bureau. This item was carried on the agenda for future discussion. 10 - UNDERWRITERS' LABORATORIES - GYPSUM ASSOCIATION LIAISON Mr. Brackett briefly reported on this subject, noting the importance of cooperation with U.L. covering labeling and quality assurance programs. This subject was carried on the agenda for future discussion. 11 - ASBESTOS DUST - JOINT COMPOUND Mr. J. D. Shull, Technical Committee Chairman, reported on the recent asbestos field testing program conducted in the Denver, Colorado area by George D. Clayton and Associates. He stated that the results of this test program supported the special committee's recom mendation that the industry label joint treatment compound and recom mended that respirators be worn. Mr. Shull noted that new OSHA stand ards for asbestosis and silica are currently being developed and that the special committee need not plan to pursue this matter further until such time that the new OSHA standards were developed. This subject was carried on the agenda. 12 - FUTURE COMMITTEE MEETING Following much discussion, on motion carried, the Manufacturing and Mining Committee voted to hold its next meeting at the time of the semiannual meeting.
