September 14, 1953 * October 30, 1953 CHARGES A-I-C-52 DATE SUBMITTED! 12/1/53 DATS ISSUED! 12/22/53 DUP050069590 IHTRODUCTION: Following the approval of our Indanthrone Blue, BP-258-D, aa a satisfactory aubatituta for Harmon*a Xndo-Blu# B-l, y & F actually started using it in production early this year, A feu months ago, ue mere advised by 7 & P that lacquer enamels made from current BP-258-D mere somewhat lower in gloss than those previously made with the Harmon pigment* It was explained that the gloss difference, while noticeable, was still within acceptable limits* However, we ware requested to bring BP-258-D back into line with respect to slosit BP-258-D is a vat dye lake prepared by paste or slurry mixing the vat dye, Orchem*s *Lithosol Blue, and alumina hydrate extender which is purchased as a dry powder* the ratio of the dye to alumina hydrate is approximately 40 to 60* SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS: The conclusion drawn from the results of the investigation of the factor or factors responsible for poor gloss performance of BP-25S-D shipments in "Duco" may be suasaarised as follows s 1. Standard BP-258-D (8*0* 808) was found to be slightly inferior in gloss to Bamon*t Indo Blue B-l (C#55451)* Incidentally, the roainated pigment, BP-242-D, gave superior gloss to both BP-258-D and the competitive* 2* Current plant production of BP-258-D was found to be inferior in gloss to standard, thereby confirming 7 & 7*s contention* 3* Inferiority of plant production with respect to gloss in *Dueo" was traced to the quality of the alumina hydrate (type X purchased from B.Sf* Spencer) 4* Evaluation of types K, 50 and dOalumina hydrate supplied by B.M* Spencer* but manufactured by tfestvaco Chemical, showed type 50 to give gloss equal to standard BP-258-D. 5* Preparation of BP-258-D using freshly precipitated alumina hydrate (37*12) slurry gave gloss in "Duco* superior to both BP-258-D standard and Barmon*s Indo Bins B-l* 6* Freshly precipitated alumina hydrate in BP-258-D showed no advantage in gloss in air dried Syntax 55. On baking* it showed slightly better gloss than use of purohsesd dry hydrate. DISCUSSION: Ae a preliminary investigation of the cause of the decrease in gloee of BP-258-D shipments in "Duco", work was undertaken to DUP050069591 investigate what effect, if any, the amount of alumina hydrate incorporated in the pigment had on the gloss of the finished product. Samples mere prepared varying in the ratio content of pigment to alumina hydrate* the results showed that gloss in lacquer decreased with increase in alumina hydrate* Subsequent investigations of plant batches revealed that the moisture content of the plant lots ran higher than that of the standard* on careful drying of the plant samples, the moisture content was brought down to the level of the standard* However* the retried plant lots on routine testing (two* roll lacquer dispersions) showed no improvement in gloss* Following that .attention was fooused on how different types of alumina hydrate affect gloss* An experiment was devised to test this offset using several types of alumina hydrate currently produced by Weetvaco and sold by B. M* Spencer and Co* The present line of Westvaco includes three different types of alumina hydrate, namelyI Alumina Hydrate K, Alumina Hydrate 50 and Alumina Hydrate o0 Of the three types manufactured* Alumina Hydrate 50 (sulfate base superseding, type s) showed on evaluation gloea characteristics equal to that of the standard* The cause for the decrease ingloss was therefore traced to the type of alumina hydrate used* In order to substantiate this observation* small quantities of alumina hydrate were freshly prepared following the procedure of SF-12 and 3F-23 The results were highly gratifying* Close was shown to be by far superior to that of the competitive sample and our present standard* It surpassed the latter by 20 arbitrary points an gloaamster readings* Substitution of barium rosinate for alumina hydrats also improves the gloss properties of the product* Four othor effects with the freshly prepared alumina hydrate wears noted* 1* The sulfate base and phosphate base formulations of fresh alumina had about equal bearing on the resulting gloss property* 2* Variation in the content of j||dt ash of tht SF-12 procedure was not noticed on the gloea in the finished product. 3* Methods of washing and ths manner of addition of the separate ingredients have apparently no effect on the gloss of the product* 4* In the process of drying ths slurry* ths temperature* and not the length of time* determine the moisture content* It was found that drying at UO*F or 160*F gave about equal results in gloss chsraoterlstics of tbs finished product* On the other hand* drying DUP050069592 at 200*F diminlahaa gloaa and decreaaea tha yield.
