DEPARTMENT!' 22

In reply to your memo of April 24 covering various process design data sheets for Department 22, I have the following comments:
1) Pump 22P20 has been discussed with you previously and I
believe that we are in agreement that the capacity should
be increased to approximately 200 gpm to reduce pump-out time of the VCM Rundown Tanks.
2) Pump 22P22 Is indicated for intermittent operation, about 10 minutes every two hours. It Is my belief that a pump handling
hot tar bottom such as this pump will give better service If it operates continuously with recycle and off - on flow control for the sump level.
3) The materials of construction for the majority of the pumps appear to be cast iron casing and an alloy impeller and shaft. I should appreciate your requesting that General Engineering advise us as to the reasons for the selection of this
combination ox' materials.
4) I note that for surge tanks they have indicated a surge time equal to the gross volume o- the tank divided by the gpm
inflow. I believe that this leads to an erroneous under standing as to what is the practical surge time available.
In all probability the tanks will normally be controlled at
a half full level so that the available surge, in case either the inflow or outflow is stopped, becomes only half the
gross capacity. I feel that in some cases the surge time based on half the gross capacity is probably inadequate.
In particular, 22So, 22T3 and 22T6 might be subject to further consideration.
