Atomic Energy
North Caromka Stats Conece and the Atomic Energy Commission have signed an agreement that opens the way lor immediate operation of the firat uni versity-owned nuclear reactor in the nation. Under this contract, AEC will loan the Coltege enough fissionable uronltim 235 to fuel the "Raleigh Re search Reactor** recently constructed in a new building on campus.
This agreement culminetea o project that has been under way since June 1950 when the college, under contract with the AEC, initiated design and con struction of a low-powered research reactor. The reactor aoaerably and most of the pro-operational tests are now com plete. Loading of fuel and initial opera tion will begin os soon as the fissionable material arrives from AEC-
The reaotor, designed and built with university funds, will supply experience to students in nuclear engineering, a new curriculum initiated by the college in 19S0. North Carolina State was the first educational institution to approach AEC with a proposal to design, build end operate a research reactor. Since that time, several other institutions have proposed similar projects.
Riciiaro March, staff assistant in the reactor division of the Chicago opera tions office of the AEC, claims that it is one thing to produce power by nuc lear fission, another to do it economical ly. Speaking at a recent meeting of the Illinois chapter of the American So ciety of Heating and Ventilating En gineers, March stated that our esti mated future power consumption mokes necessary a fuel substitute.
Industrial feosibility of nuclear pow er, lie continued, depends on many fac tors and, in his opinion, such power CMonot compete now or in the near fu ture with established Jaduurisl fuels.

The rotor of a Terry Solid-wheel Turbine is a single forging of special com-
position steel. It is first rough turned in two operations, os illustrated, and then two cuts are token ro mill the semi-cir cular buckets from the solid metal. The ,

As the only function of the blades is
to form a series of pockets, wear of the blades is of little consequence and does
not materially affect the horsepower or efficiency. The important part of the
bucket is the back, or bottom, which is
a solid forging.
It is impossible for the blades to foul. They have large clearances, and are fur
ther protected by the projecting rims
at the sides of the wheel. As the side clearances are also very inrge,
cod ploy can do no harm.
