Arlington, Virginia 22209 f Aluminum Committee Meeting Safety Wearing Apparel Group September 20, 1978 Holiday Inn, Richmond, Virginia MINUTES A meeting of the Aluminum Committee, Safety Wearing Apparel Group, Industrial Safety Equipment Association, was held on Wednesday, September 20, 1978, at -the Holiday Inn, Richmond, Virginia. Sager Glove Corporation Wheeler Protective Apparel ISEA Counsel ISEA Executive Director Chairman Sager presided and called the, meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. He asked the Executive Director to review the minutes of the previous meeting of the committee, which was a conference call on March 6, 1978. On motion by Mr. Wheeler, seconded by Mr. Shepard and carried, the minutes were ap proved as presented. Chairman Sager then described the second phase of the cooperative testing program with the Aluminum "Association, which would take place on September 21st at Reynolds Metals Company. Mr. Sager pointed out that, in addition to ISEA member companies and representatives of the Aluminum Association, the Wool Bureau, Cotton, Inc., DuPont Company, and Claremont Company would also be in attendance. He also noted that the Aluminum Association has indicated their agreement to share in the expenses of tomorrow's program, which will be based on calorimetric testing under the supervision of Phil Jaynes. Mr. Sager indicated-that Phil Jaynes was selected for this assign ment because of his many years experience conducting tests of this type for the steel industry, and because of his overall competence and impar tiality. It was noted that approximately 36 fabrics which had performed the best during the initial testing on April 19, 1978, would be tested tomorrow. Furthermore, it was. announced that approximately 20 additional fabrics that have not previously been tested will be subjected to the calorimetric testing. Mr. Sager also provided committee members with some technical background on the development of calorimetric testing, pointing out it is based on the measurement of both time and heat and relating this to pain thresholds and the differences between first-, second- and third-degree bums. DKS 260 2- - --* Mr. Sager also reported to the committee that the DuPont Company has donated the temperature-recording equipment for tomorrow's testing, and that Mr. Wally Behnke of DuPont will be supervising the'use of this equipment. The committee discussed its future plans, and concluded it would be desirable to develop a list of acceptable fabrics as a result of tomorrow's testing program. As the next step, clothing could be prepared for field testing. Belated to this, Mr. Sager stated that he thought the Aluminum Association would like to have tests of clothing conducted on mannequins as the next phase of this program, to find the most suitable clothing for exposure to molten aluminum. It was revealed the Executive Director, Chairman Sager, and Mr. Jaynes have been invite'd by the Aluminum Association to meet with their com mittee `on October 4th to present the preliminary results of the September 21, 1978, testing. Because limited data will be available at that time, Mr. Houston suggested it would be preferable to have only the Executive Director and Mr. Jaynes meet with the Aluminum Association on October 4th in Chicago, and then have a meeting involving the whole committee, together with the Alumi num' Association, sometime after Mr. Jaynes has had an opportunity to prepare a final report on the calorimetric testing. This plan was agreeable with com mittee members, 'and Mr. Jaynes subsequently indicated his final report should be ready in early November.
