STATISTICAL COMMITTEE REPORT In the Chairman's abse^ice, J. M. Barnhart reported as follows: The Marketing Research Committee recommends for consideration by the Board of Directors the following changes in statistical reporting: 1) Private brand sales should be reported by the member mak ing the ultimate shipment rather than by the manufacturer. This would improve the statistics by providing a more ac curate geographic breakdown and a more consistent soles value for such shipments. Members' private brand sales to non-members would of course continue to be reported by the manufacturer. It is requested that Mr. Barnhart poll the membership by letter, so that this revision could be effective January 1, 19^9* 2) A report of shipments of physical units of Fibrous Pipe Insulation would be useful, to discount the increasing use of more expensive jackets. For simplicity, we pro pose an annual report of lineal feet of Fibrous Pipe In sulation, starting with the year 1968, to be collected by Price Waterhouse, Mr. Barnhart is requested to deter mine by letter ballot from the interested members if they agree to such a report. Discussion on Item #2 revealed it would not be practical to undertake this project. The committee also proposes: 1) To provide to oil members a new list of members' product trade names in each category of the statistical reports. Mir. Barnhart will request this up-dated infox*m3tion from each member. 2) To publish a periodic statement of the rules for report ing shipments through Price Waterhouse. These guidelines would include the exclusion of export sales, sales to original equipment manufacturers, and structural insula tions. 3 PUBLICITY COMMITTEE REPORT In the Chairman's absence, J. M. Barnhart reported that Wathen/Walsh had published two issues of the "NIMA Newsletter" and was in the process of publishing the final issue for the year. The subject of the final issue was an interview with J, Pollock, Executive Secretary of IDCNA. A motion was made, seconded and passed That the final issue shall not be released until the IDCNA Board of Directors or the IDCNA President approves its contents. It was agreed to send IDCNA average values for use in the Manual. GSA, WASHINGTON, D.C., MAY 7, 1968 This agency was visited for the purpose of attempting to obtain revision to GSA Specifications pertaining to the use of flexible duct systems products. 4 ASHRAE MEETING> LAKE PIACID, N.Y. , MAY 24, 25, I968 This meeting was attended for the purpose of attending Committee Meetings of TC 4.1 and 2.4 relating to duct design and thermal insulations. T & R COMMITTEE MEETINGS, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. JUNE 24, 25, 1968 The Mineral Fiber Section, and Molded Section of the T & R Committee met and discussed the following subjects: 1. Round Robin Thermal Conductivity Testing 2. ASTM Specifications for Stress Corrosion Effect of Thermal Insulations on Stainless Steel 3. Fire Testing of Thermal Insulations 4. MIL-1'24244 5. Rewrite of HH-I-558. T & R COMMITTEE MEETING, NEW YORK, NEVJ YORK, AUGUST 28, 1968 The Committee met for the purpose of formulating an industry approach to be presented to the Naval Ships Command relative to MIL-I-24244. ELECTRIC BOAT, GROTON, CONNECTICUT, SEPTEMBER 19, 1968 A group from the T & R Committee met with Mur. I. Glass of Electric Boat to discuss revisions to MIL-I-24244. MOLDED SECTION REPORT In the Chairman's absence, J. M. Barnhart reported on the activities of the Committee in accordance with the Minutes of their Meeting, v?hich is attached hereto and made part of these Minutes. MINERAL FIBER SECTION REPORT V, T. Irvin reported as follows: The T & R Committee met on June 24 and 25> 19&8* Actions token by the Mineral Fiber Section since the Spring Meeting ore: 1. Guide Specification CE-201.01, Metal Buildings. This was re viewed end revisions suggested in letter of August 9> 19$ *-0 the Office of the Chief of Engineers. 5 2. Mil. Spec. MIL-I-7^2 C. Hecommendation in letter dated August 9> 1968 that fiber di ameter requirements be deleted os unnecessary in a specifi cation based on performance. 3. Mil. Spec. MIL-I-22344 B. Recommendation to delete fiber diameter requirements and in crease density permitted up to 8 lbs/cu. ft. was made to Dept, of Navy in letter of January 17 > 1968. 4. ASTM combined specifications C 378 and C 392. Recommendation made to delete section on Alkalinity. No member offers a Class 4 product under this specification. 5. U.L, Fire Hazard Classification U.L. receptive to idea of classification. NIMA T & R consid ering proposal for 3 classes based on flame spread and smoke developed ratings. HH-I-5459 Duct Lines Recommended that Government T & R request GSA amend HH-I-545 in line with NINA Standard for Duct Liner. This specification on agenda for November meeting of T & R, (Should be on Duct Systems?) 7. Fed. Spec. HH-I-550. Suggested revisions to this specification are on agenda for November meeting. DUCT SYSTEMS COMMITTEE REPORT J. M. Barnhart reported on the activities of the Committee in accordance with the Minutes of their Meetings which are attached and made part of these Minutes. EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT In the Chairman's absence, J. M, Barnhart reported on the activities of the Committee and included the following: 1. Meetings with the IDCNA Regional Contractor Associations 6 2. Insulation Hygiene Council Meetings 3. Meeting with Lynn Schall, New Jersey Department of Health It was recommended to the Board of Directors that the Education Committee meet with the Health Departments of various states. The Board of Directors approved this recommendation. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE REPORT ' Dr. L. B. Grant reported as follows: The Committee met twice since the last Board meeting in April, 1968. The first meeting was on July 23, 1968, and the minutes of this meet ing are attached. The highlights of this meeting included A joint meeting with the Duct Committee at which it was decided to request a study proposal from Kettering Lab oratory which was to be a follow-on of the fiber glass duct erosion studies that laboratory had recently com pleted under laboratory conditions. The study pro posal would be concerned with installed fiber glass duct liners and systems to again determine to what degree, if any, they produced fiber glass in air of respirable size through fiber glass erosion. A progress report on the United States Public Health '' Service mineral fiber industry study. A progress report on the Industrial Hygiene Foundation mineral fiber study. A review and approval of a draft of text for the NIKA NEWS relating to activities of the Health and Safety Committee. A review of a research proposal requested by the Com mittee from W. Clark Cooper, M.D., School of Public Health, University of California in Berkeley. The pur pose of the study would be to quantitate the fiber gloss exposures of a group of insulation workers. Dr. Cooper and his group have previously quantitated the asbestos exposure of this same group of insulation workers and published this study. The Committee agreed that the NIKA Board should be appraised of the research proposal and the Committee's opinion that such research is necessary because no information is presently avail able that quantitates the fiber gloss exposure to workers 7 other than in the manufacture of fiber glass. The Committee members representing the fiber glass manu facturers will meet with Dr. Cooper and his group to further consider the proposal. Such research would be jointly sponsored by these companies. The second meeting of the Committee was on October 4, 1968, at the Ket tering Laboratory to discuss the follow-on installed fiber glass duct erosion studies referred to above. The minutes of this meeting will be made available at a later date. The Kettering Laboratory was requested to prepare a study proposal for the Committee's consideration. Progress at the time of this writing on the research studies requested by NIMA and/or NIMA member companies being performed by the Industrial Hygiene Foundation and the United States Public Health Sez'vice is pro gressing satisfactorily. A twelve-month progress report of the fibrous glass inhalation study indicates that fibrous glass dust inhaled into the lungs of rets and hamsters is biologically inert. Thus far, the U-.S.P.H.S. has microfilmed over:50,000 records of former employees at two-Owens-Corning Fiberglas Plants and has performed environmental.stud ies at these plants. TREASURERS REPORT J. F. Vyverberg outlined the Association's Balance Sheet, Statement of Income and Expenditures, Comparison of Actual Expenses to Budget, and the Duct Systems Program as of August 31> 1968. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to accept the Treasurer's Report. 1969 BUDGET A motion was made, seconded, and passed That the Budget for 1969 shall be in the amount of $^2,950.00. 9 OTHER BUSINESS (o) R.
