Kaley De t r o it , Mic h ig a n March 12, 1943 With reference to Dr, Kehoe*s letter of March 10, I think that -we are all in agreement as to the proper way of hand ling requests for Fluids and tetraethyllead. I would summarize the method as follows: 1. Any substantial shipments of Fluid should be handled by New York. 2. Small amounts of Fluid (perhaps 1 can or less) might be handled by Detroit on good grounds, with notifica tion to New York and Cincinnati. 3. Small amounts of tetraethyllead end other organic lead compounds would be handled by Chemical Research, secur ing releases fI*om the recipients, and notifying the Medical Department. We might consider that our exchange of correspondence covers the matter, although it would perhaps be preferable to have the practice covered by an explicit memorandum issued by the Safety Department. In connection with the above, I am personally not in favor of having our Safety Engineers visit the chemical laboratories to which we contribute occasional small samples. In the case, however, of laboratories cooperating with us on a continuous basis, such visits would, of course, be quite in order and shoiild be arranged through me. George Calingaert C:C
