What does a higher compression engine mean to the motorist? A. It means belter ear performance. It actually gives greater horsepower and better fuel economy. If you were to increase the engine's compression ratio in your present car, it would automatically produce more horsepower. If you were a conservative driver and never used this maxi mum horsepower, the higher compression engine would give you more miles to the gallon than you're getting now, Q. Yet today's cars seem to give no better mileage than the older ones. Why? A. They're heavier. The same amount of gasoline is hauling more weight around at higher speeds, Q. Which of the 1955 model U, S, cars has the highest compression ratio? A. This year both Buick and Cadillac have a compression ratio of 9 to 1. Five other ears have compression ratios of 8,5 to I, The lowest this year is approximately 7.3 to 1. I've heard that a high compression engine operates at a higher temperature. Is this good or bad? A. A high compression engine does operate at a higher temperature (luring the combustion part of the cycle. During other parts of the cycle, however, it actually runs cooler.
