When areas of damaged wrapping material and/or insulating material on steam or water lines, furnaces, etc., are identified or found, work orders will be sent to the maintenance departments to cover these areas. 2. These damaged areas must be covered with a wrapping material or tape so that no fibers can become airborne. 3. A determination will be made at the time of repair if the wrapping material, the insulating material, or both, should be replaced. If the insulation is replaced, a material not containing asbestos must be used. 4. Special training must be given to those who will be doing this work. 5. These people will be required to wear respirators that are approved by NIOSH for protection against asbestos. 6. Asbestos material should be wetted down, if possible, prior to being torn o f f , so as not to lose fibers to the air. 7. Care should be taken so that employes not performing this work will not be exposed to the dust. 8. Air samples must be taken When insulation is removed so that airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers will be a matter of record. 9. When major replacement is necessary, these people must also be provided with work clothing and separate locker facili ties. Contaminated clothing must be transported in plastic bags and labeled with asbestos warning labels, 10. Cleaning by blowing off with compressed air is forbidden. Special vacuum equipment that will not recirculate the dust roust be used to clean up fibers when the work is finished. 11. A supply of plastic sheets, plastic bags and asbestos Warn ing labels must be available. The sheets are to be spread out under the work area before the work is begun. Waste must be tied in plastic bags and labeled before being dis carded . 12. Pre-employment, annual and termination physical exams must be given, and records retained as required by the OSHA standard.
