Sky 19# 1936 Dr* Carl Wllzbacb Community Chest Building 312 West 9th Street Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Carl* I am sending you herewith, a list of names of persona who appeared In the photograph taken at the Laboratory* I have included the titles,expressed in common understandable terms, and I have Included the names of members of the staff who were not present at the time the picture was taken* Hy idea of the chief useful* ness of this pioture, quite apart from what I said to you the other day over the phone, is to Indicate the slse of the research staff, which I think may be a matter of some surprise to a good many people* Obviously this purpose will best be served collecting el the* the faces or the names of all the staff members* I repeat that it is a matter of very little concorn to me as to whether or- not this picture is used, but I am inclined to thirds that a research institute in the Medical School which is staffed by more than twenty people might be a matter of some interest to a good many local citizens* 1 em sending along also my own ideas of what the legends under the other pictures might carry* These may be too lenghthy and the newspaperman may wish to condense them, which, of course, would be all right* However, I think they convey the ideas which seem to me of some conse quence . Quite apart from the opinion of our newspaper friends and certain members of your eomnittee. It has been my experience that people are Interested In scientific equipment* They seem to think very highly of the instruments of precision that are used by scientific workers. As a matter of fact, they often think more of the instruments than of the people who use them. Consequently I ao not: think that this collection of p ictures 1# as empty of human interest as might be believed* Moreover, 1 repeat what I told you over the phone the other day, in somewhat more temporate terms, that It la beneath the dignity of solentifle workers who are actually engaged in studying Important medical problems, to resort to side-show methods in presenting themselves to the community* The intelligent people see through the "baloney" and the people whom one is chiefly Interested In attracting. Dr, Carl 'Yllzbach namely those who have money to contribute* are In no wise deluded by It* The op In 1 ns of our newspaper friends to the contrary* therefore* this results in making Itself ridiculous to no purpose* I trust I have not made your Job unduly unpleasant by some show of Irritation on this question* but I have never been one to conceal my point of view in con nection with the Interests of this Medical School or of medical Investigations in general.
