MINUTES OF MEETING OF POWER AND PROCESS COMMITTEE OF T.I.M.A. FEBRUARY 25, 1974 IN DALLAS, TEXAS AIRPORT MARINA HOTEL This was the first meeting of 1974 for the Power and Process committee under new chairman Mr. Richard Gamble of Fiberboard Corporation. There was no prepared agenda due to the lack of previous meeting minutes and agendas. The following were present at this first meeting: Mr. R. F. Gamble (Chairman) Mr. H. J, Weber Mr. J. The meeting was opened at 9:12 am by Mr. Gamble and he informed those present that the following could not attend; Mr. R. W. Henry Mr. D. M. Dierson Calsilite U. S, Gypsum Company n48" Insulation has resigned from T.I.M.A, as indicated by Mr. T, S. Clausi in a letter to Mr. Gamble. Mr. P. K. Maitra Eagle-Picher The following items were discussed to determine what further action would be required by this committee. ITEM I - Letter from P. K. Maitra on suggested changes to MIL-1-27819D, 769 and KHI-558B, dated April 13, 1973. Ed Cusick questioned how often these specifications are refered to by customers, etc. H, Weber indicated all navy jobs refer to these specifications. Joe Wilson all government related projects refer to these specification-.. Don Glosser requested T.I.M.A. make a suggestion that tolerance on long':. be changed from 36" + 1/8" to 36" + k" as maintaining this tolerance is difficult for some manufacturers equipment. D. Gamble suggested add conversion to metric for all english values. COMMITTEE ACTION Don Glosser to contact J. Barnhart to suggest tolerance revision now rather than wait approximately 1 year before total revision can be performed. ITEM II - Letter from Mr. Jorgeusen of Rohm and Haus dated April 2, 1973 requesting consideration of "color coding" asbestos free insulation. Don Glosser indicated Owens-Coming has reviewed this possiblity and decided not to do it as it was impractical and un-economical. Tom Buche indicated Johns-Manville would reject this suggestion as some insulations are presently colored and confuction could result. COMMITTEE ACTION Don Glosser will draft a statement for Jack Barnhart to send to Mr. Jorgeusen as official T.I.M.A. reply. ITEM III - T.I.M.A. policy statement on Austenitic Stainless Steel. Joe Wilson stated this policy statement was issued by Jack Barnhart in 1971-1972 and that it should be available. COMMITTEE ACTION Joe Wilson to send each member a copy of this statement from Jack Barnh ITEM IV - Basic consideration for high or low temperature systems. Joe Wilson indicated this item was a consideration at one time to be is by T.I.M.A. COMMITTEE ACTION All present agreed this was not an item for this corraittce and further discussion may not be necessary. Item dropped from committee. ITEM V - Contact Architect and Engineers to call for insulation on concedes piping. Don Clnsscr stated this should fall under "Why Insulate1' and should pretty well cove .d in Econ I & II, Dick Camble felt ve should transfer this to Commercial 6 Mechanical Committee. W. Bartlett mentioned a good comparison may be available by getting heating cost of Twin Towers, Here one building has concealed piping insulated while the second building piping was not insulated. COMMITTEE ACTION P. Camble will write a letter to Bill Pitkin transfering this item to their agenda, Joe Wilson will send information on Twin Tower to Bill Pitkin when received, ITEM VI - Review York Proposal outlined in letter dated January 28, 1974. Dick Gamble stated OSHA has not yet published an acceptable surface temperature limit and to contact them now may "open a can of worms", OSHA in California has settled on 130*? to 140F as acceptable. Ed Cusick questioned if safety of surface temperature could be a selling ' point for Economical Thickness. Pick Gamble asked for each company to run hot pipe test with various jackets and compare results. All committee members felt that respective companies could run their own test and computer program less expensive then York. x COMMITTEE ACTION Holding off accpting York proposal until results of test are received; then, if results indicate this-information should accompany Econ I and II, York will then be contacted. HEM VII - Review of T.I.M.A. Econ II progress. Don Glosser informed commit tee of Washington, D. C. presentation at 10:30 Intemation Club. March 13, 1974. Further presentation scheduled at various N.I.C.A. regional meetings where T.I.M.A. will use 1 hour or so f0 presentation. COMMITTEE ACTION Members will attend when possible. ITEM VIII - Statement of consideration of cost in Econ IX. Joe Wilson presented suggested statement for review by committee, describir * those costs not included in Econ II calculations. D. Glosser felt each company's salesmen should handle this request. Ed Cusick felt it should be put out by T.I.M.A. (agreed to by D. Gamble.) COMMITTEE ACTION Dick Gamble to contact J. Barnhart and other committees for their comments and recommendations. ITEM IX - Should T.I.M.A, develop small brochure, as outlined in second proposa of York letter, D. Gamble felt this would be a good tool to help facilities engineers to determine feasibility of insulating previously uninsulated piping etc., for a payback of 2-3 years. COMMITTEE ACTION Conmittee decided to hold off for the present. ITEM X N.I.C.A. Outlook Magazine. D. Gamble was elected chairman of joint T.I.M.A./N.I.C.A. Committee to investigate supply shortages in future and ask the committee's feeling as to how successful a survey of the industry would be; this would bu for insulation and all accessories. The committee discussed the problem involved in this type of survey and felt the participation would be small and scattered. This item is not on this committee agenda. MI SC. 1. J.
