Grumbles June 23, 1989 CMA RESPONSIBLE CARE UPDATE TGG: MMG: A<KjfRF XF: --ax-wc VISIA I recently attended a Responsible CARE Coordinators Meeting. comments from the meeting are below. Highlights and 1. The UK and Australia are beginning to develop Responsible CARE programs through their respective chemical trade groups. 2. The point was made that the chemical industry's bad public image was from poor performance not from bad "public relations". This is the foundation of Responsible CARE being a performance based program. 3. As of June 1, 155 out of 173 CMA member companies had signed the commitment forms. 4. The development of Codes of Management Practice has begun. Drafts for waste minimization, community relations, transportation, and safe plant operations are out for review. They expect completion by early spring. 5. The Public Advisory Panel has been formed and the first meeting has been held. 6. A flow diagram of the results of public perception was discussed. Below is the diagram. Industry Performance---------* Public Perception------^Political Opportunity f -----------------------Regulation^------------------------------Legislation*------------ 7. Canadian Chemical Association representatives discussed experiences with Responsible CARE the last three years. In general, the aspect of public responsiveness has had the greatest impact or shown the highest return. We hope to present the Environmental Policy Statement to the Board in July. If approved, we will proceed to communicate the policy and Responsible CARE to all parts of the company. I'll keep you informed of our progress and I'll be seeking your involvement.
