The meeting *as called to order by President Peels,who noted that Mr. B.A.Sohuman,and Mr. Ted D. MoCluskey had been properly accredited by letter to represent their respective companies in the absence of Messers R.S. Hough and T.C. MoCluskey. 2. The minutes of the last meeting of this Board,held on Feb.6,1964 were presented for reading,but since all members had received copies and were familiar with same,it was moved by Mr.Fettes and seconded by Mr. Griffis,that the minutes be approved as submitted. Agreement to this motion was unanimous. 3. The Treasurer's Report as of May 8, 1964,was submitted and read by the Secretary. It was moved by Mr,Griffis,and seconded by Mr. Bettes,that the report be accepted,and agreement was unanimous. Mr.Griffis moved that $5000.00 be transferred from the General Fund,to the Savings account Fund,and there was unanimous agree- ' ment that this should be done at once,by the Secretary. Mr. Reyoraft questioned the method of reporting the previous transfer of $5000.00 to the Savings Fund,as shown on the report of May 8th,and the Secretary agreed to take this matter up with the Treasurer in order to arrive at the ccrreot procedure in the handling of this current transfer. .4 Mr. Sc human suggested that a Special Program be considered for our Twentieth Anniversary Annual Meeting whioh will be held on October 9th. (The Institute was organized at a meeting held on November 16, 1944 ) There was general agreement that this should be done,and President Poele appolmted Mr, Bettes as Chairman of the " 20th Anniversary Committee". 2 Minutes- Board of Governors Page 2 5. Preaident Peel# "brought up the matter of the "Symposium on Asbestosls" to be held on October 19-21, 1964,at the WaldorfAa tor la, lork City,pointing out that the position of A.T.I. in respect to representation at the symposium should be settled. After discussion it was agreed that A.T.I. would hare no official representatlon,but that member companies should try to have their company doctor,or their hygienist,attend. Further,that we should ask Dr.Lewis J. Cralley,of the U.S. Public Health Service,if he would be agreeable to present certain data that he has accumul ated todate from his industry survey,to the symposium) 6. The Secretary reported on the .project for printing up a pamphlet entitled " Method for Determining Asbestos Dust Concentration" as recommended by the Air Hygiene & Mfg. Committee at the February meeting (1964). This pamphlet is now in hands of printer,and is expected to be finished in the later part of June. The cost of one thousand copies will be about $370.00. Pamphlet has been priced by the Board of Governors to sell at $1.00 eaeh. The first publicity for this new pamphlet will appear in the June issue of the Asbestos Magazine. 7. As agreed in our previous meeting, a pa plaque has been prepared for presentation to Mr. J ,L.Tucker,who had served the A.T.I. as ohairman of the Technical Committee prior to his retirement from active business,and the Board was given a preview of the plaque. Comments were most favorable on its general appearance and the wording of the commendation. 8. President Peels Introduced a letter from Johnson's Company Ltd., dated May 5, 1964,in which they tendered their resignation as an Associate Member of the Institute,due to the fact that they had been taken over by the Asbestos Corporation. It was moved by Mr. Griffis,seconded by Mr. Weber that the resignation be accepted with regret,and that,in view of the fact that dues for all of 1964 were paid,that Johnson's Company had no further obligation in respect to membership dues. Agreement was unanimous. 9 10. Receipt of literature from Dr. S. Holmes,Secretary, Asbestosls Research Council,Turner Brothers Asbestos Co.,Rochdale,Hng.,in April of this year,was reported by the Secretary. This litera- tore,consisting of a dozen copies each of four different papers on the genearal subject of Asbestosls has been turned over to the Air Hygiene and Mfg. Committee of A.T.I. President Peele reported that Mr. Hough had been advised by Nicolet Asbestos Mines Ltd.,that they wished to "table " the natter of beooming an Associate Member of A.T.I. at this time, appointment 12. President Peele oallsd attention to the/aiiwwtxjauaexi of ton Mr. Bernard Lincoln,Director,n Turner & Newall Ltd. Asbestos Fibre Laboratory,Trafford Park,Manchester 17,2nglandjas a member of the A.T.I. Fiber Testing Committee. It is felt that mutual benefit will be derived from Mr. Lincoln's attendanoe at. meetings of. our Fiber Testing Committee,and interim correspondence con cerning the current work being carried on. 13.. A letter from Bell Asbestos Mines,dated May 4th, in which they informed us that Nr. Dodds-Hebron has become a Direotor of their company,and la in charge of milling operations since the passing of Herbert Smith,was noted. Mr. Dodds-Hebron is attending the current meeting of the Fiber Testing Committee, 14. Letter of May 6th from Mr J.T, Griffis to the Secretary raised the question of whether the A.T.I. should assist,m$or cooperate with, Jessop Steel Company in furthering the distribution of a paper on "Asbestoals",same being a reprint from the Official Journal o the American College of Cheat Physicians. It was decided that we would mat oonflne its distribution to our Air Hygiene Committee. 14. Receipt of a card of thanks from Mr. J.T, Griffis and family for flowers sent by A.T.I. at the time of Mrs.Griffis funeral was noted. 15. The Secretary read a letter from Mr.Clarence A. Predell of the Genral Services Administration,dated June 1st, in reference Specification P-3-R3 whioh governs the purchase of raw ohryaotile asbestos fiber for the stock pile. The point at issue is the specified Magnetic Rating of 0.75 percent,and whether this should be raised to allow for the drop in magnetite which occurs . in textile processing. It was decided to accept the recommendation of our Fiber Testing Committee in replying to this letter. 16. President Peele appointed the following men to serve as a Nom inating Committee to bring in a slate of offloers for election at our annual meeting in October: W.S. Hough - Chairman (Johns-Kanvllle Corp) J.L, Rainey ( American Asbestos Textile Corp.) L.C. Williams ( Raybastoa-Manhattan,Inc.) 17. Mr. Schuman suggested that we consider the possibility of extend ing invitations to representatives of asbestos textile manufact urers in foreign countries who plan to attend the symposium on Asbeatosla Oct.19-21,to attend our Annual Meeting on Oct.9th if they can so arrange their schedule. This would not be limited to our present assoolate members in Sngland and France, Further thought is to be given this suggestion. Minutes - Board or Governors Page 4 18. Data of the next meeting of A.7.I. Is October 8-9, 1964,and Is to be held at the Barblson-Plaza Hotel, Mew York,M.Y. 19* The date and place of the first meeting In 1965 is to be recommended by a committee composed of Messers Peele and Griffis. The possibility of a southern location for sometime in February was suggested,and met with generally favorable reaction. 20.
