Approximately 310 feet of 8, 1 and 1/2 inch lines were stripped plus about 50 square feet of asbestos was removed from a reactor at Building 9. An enclosure was built over the pumps at the #1 Pumphouse but could not be sealed because of the size and configuration of the pumps and piping. One of the personal samples was above the 0.2 fibers/cc permissible exposure per OSHA asbestos standard 29CFR 1926.58. Two samples were above the 0.1 fiber/cc action level per the same standard. Employees wore no street clothes, two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and AO R57-A HEPA half-face cartridge respirators. They showered before meals and at the end of the workday before leaving plant. Exposure monitoring may not be required in some instances where supplied air respirators in the positive pressure demand mode are being used for asbestos abatement projects. We encourage the use of supplied air respirators whenever possible.
