HeDolei c> /*! * chlorinated biphenyl, a phosphate ester, and a high viscosity aalaatad petroleum fraction of lee volatility. Our label for this product eontalna the following praoautlonary statenant > CAUTION! Contalaa Chlorinated Mydrooarbona. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors or alata. Avoid aontaat with ayaa or prolonged eontaet with akin. If akin eontaet occurs, ranova by waahlag with aoap and water. Following aye eontaet flush with water. If slothing becomes aaaked with fluid, launder Sxperlanoe with this and other nowhere of the fydraul series lndleate that these fluids should be used in systens as free from leaks aa possible. This is partloularly iwpertant if the fluid la at elevated tswportturo where eenpenenta of the foenulation nay be volatilised into the warkroon. At anblent teaperwture the vapor pressures are sueh that there are no slgnlfleant vapor inhalation hasards. If there is seeldental spraying of Fydraul 513 into aolten natal or on heated surfaoee, the fluid will be vaporised and/ta desoapooed depending on the tenperature of the natal. OSW 018607 STLCOPCB4005151 Mr. EWSll . McDol January 17* 1966 Pag 2 About 13 years ago wo had rathor extensive tosta run at Kettering Laboratories at the Univoralty of Cincinnati whoro a Pydraul fluid waa sprayed on natal haatad to 1050F and 1250^. Tho vaporised fluid and decomposition products ware discharged into suitable anlaal exposure chambers. Similar experiments were run with a tricrasyl phosphate hydraulic fluid and a petroleum based fluid. The general conclusion reached was that there was little difference, from a practical standpoint, in the toxicity of the three products as demonstrated in the experiments. If a phosphate ester fluid or Pydraul is sprayed Into molten metal aa a result of the rupture of a hydraulic line on a diecasting machine, a cloud of acrid vapor and smoke will develop. This will consist principally of soot, CO, COo, water, aldehydes end oresols, in the case of Pydraul, there will be in addition (hydrochloric acid in the smoke due to the deocoDosltion of the chlorinated compound. This may make the "cloud somewhat more aorld or irritating but does not significantly increase the toxlolty. Where the Pydrauls have been Involved in such accidents, there have not been oases where employees could not safely shut down equipment and leave the area. As with a phosphate based fluid, it might or might not be necessary to wear respiratory protection to re-enter the area until it could be ventilated. This would depend, of course, on the amount of fluid that was sprayed or leaked onto the molten metal or hot surface. Our label reectsmsnds avoidance of repeated and prolonged skin contact. This precaution is indicated since Pydraul 312 la an excellent solvent for the natural fats and oils on the skin. When these are removed the skin may tend to dry and crack. The fluid works such like many common paint thinner in this respect. It A eaji/be of ay additional help, please do ot hesitate teles me know!
