Research - The Director* approved preliminary organliatlon steps toward a joint L.I.A. - A.Z.I. research set-up to bo financed by load and tine producers on a world-wide basis and to provide for greatly expanded research activities. A committee of seven, including tho prosldents, secretaries. Technical Steering Coocilttee chairmen and one additional Bomber of both Associatlons was appointed to work out tho details of organliatlon. HEALTH AMD SAPETT 10. Red Load Paints in Potable Ttetor Tanks - In 19li9 the Any ques tioned the safoty of using rod lead paint* on the interiors of such tanks as the result of an opinion glvon by an official of tho D.S. Public Health Service. Fiold tests sponsored by us caused the Airy to withdraw its objections. Recently the controversy was reactivated by a manufacturer of a competitive paint and has led the American Hater Works Association to consider revision of Its specification which calls for tho use of red lead, fortunately our field testing has continued through the intoironing years and is proving invaluable in refuting tho adverse propaganda. Bawovor, at this time the natter remains undeeldod and ve hare been engaged in a eorlos of meetings with A.TT.W.A., D.S.P. H.S. and other officials in an effort to prove the safoty of red lead under those conditions. 11. Childhood Lead Poisoning - Though tha allegations relative to hazards to children from load-painted toys, roforrod to in tho ropert of tha last quarter, appear to have been nogated by statements issuod by the Surgoon Gvmaral >f tho Public Hoalth Sarvice and tha American Acodery of Pediatrics, tho problem of plumbisn in snail children, mainly in the slum oroos of our older citlos, con tinues a serious and seemingly insoluble ono. Csusod by the chewing or picking eff and ingesting of load pa. nts once wldoly used for interior docoration, it has boon the source of adverse reports and publicity from such centers as Baltimore, Chicago and St. Louis and bids fair to bring about renowod pressure for legisla tion and regulation of a most unfortunate nature. 12. Warning Labels - Every effort is being made to confine the re gulatory measures aoovo rofurrod to, to the field of warning labels, which, oa applied to paints, nro obviously leas detrimental to our interests than would be aiy legislation of a prohibitory nature. Through our contacts with stats and local hoalth authorities, it is buliovod that this con be accomplished. 13. Swoottg catalog - Proprinta of tho two four-pago sections to appear In the 1958 Swooti* Architoctur-J. and Light Construction Catalogs woro circulated to members and supplied in quantity to those requosting them. The Asaodotion has sufficient preprints to distribute at its booth at tho National Home Builders Show in January, 1958, and to use in answering inquiries. 16. National Chonlcal Exposition - No exhibited at this show in Decomber and wero pleased with tho Interact shown in our display. Pictures of tho booth were circulated to membors. Wa hare contracted for space at this show to bo bold in Chicago In September, 1958. 17. Load Building Construction Bulletin No. 3 - This bulletin, dealing with lead laboratory was toe, was distributed to ovor 20,000 architects and others haring to do with the design and specification of all kinds of chemical laboratories. 18. Construction Survey - We have contracted with tho Internationally known firm of crcliitccts and enginoors, Sktdmoro, Owings and Norrill, to make a stu<y of muons to furthor develop tho markot for load and lead products in building construction. Activities in 1958 - The Tochnlcol Steering Committee, Industry Developount Comnittoo end Board of Directors considered tho rocoocorelations of the Coracles Technical Coaoittoo for 1958 activities and approvod a substantially onlorged program. "Lead In the Ceraalc Industries" Receives Printing Award -- This book, published by L.I.A. about a year ago, has recoived a Certificate of Merit fron the New lork Ecpleying printers Association In thoir annual contest. The award will be presented during printing Week Celebration, Jan. 13-17, 1958, at the Coinodore Hotel, where it will be on displqr with other award wlnnors. The award Is nade on the basis of design, printing quality, and over-all appearance and presentation of ns torial, our printers, Isaac Ooldnon Co. and L. I. A., whs collaborated in production of tha book, will each receiva certificates. RE) LEAD 28. Activities In 1958 - The Industry Dovelopzaent Coooittee and Board of Directors approved an expanded progran for 1958 based on reconnerelations of the Red Lead Technical Coonittee. It provides for core frequent page ads in color in "Engineering News Record,* for publication of three new Red Lead Technical Letters, and for rotaicing a non part-tine to contact highway engineers and other large octal protective point users in tha Interest of red lead paint. 29. Consultant - Owen P, Sbobe, who retired at the end of 1957 after 39 years with the cliddon Co., has been retained by L.IX as part -tine consultant to provide point engineering service to users of setal protective paints. Steal Structures Painting Council -- The chaiman of our Bed Lead Technical Comittea attended a netting of this group which dealt with a meber of research projects involving red lead paint that the Council boa under way. Task Group, on ihlch L.XJU is represented, net fer the first tire in Decodoor to detomine the nood and basis for an A.S.T.U* specification on lead for radiation shielding.
