On August 3, 2023, Stillaguamish Village received notification from EPA of a copper action level exceedance (ALE). This letter also outlined required follow up actions as a result of the ALE, including the submission of a corrosion control treatment recommendation by March 1, 2024 [40 CFR 141.81(e)(1)]. To return to compliance Stillaguamish Village must either: 1. If a corrosion control treatment recommendation was already completed, submit it to R10TribalDW@epa.gov as soon as possible. -OR2. Develop a corrosion control treatment recommendation and submit it to R10TribalDW@epa.gov as soon as possible. Please contact EPA or your technical assistance provider for assistance. Additionally, Stillaguamish Village must: 1. Distribute Tier 2 Public Notification (PN) within 30 days of receiving this letter and every three months afterwards until the violation has returned to compliance [40 CFR 141.203(b)]. -AND2. Check with your primacy agency to make sure you meet its requirements. This treatment helps prevent lead and/or copper in the pipes from dissolving into the water. The treatment recommendation should have been submitted by 3/1/2024 but was not. What does this mean? This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours. Typically, lead and copper enter water supplies by leaching from pipes and plumbing components. Older homes may contain lead or copper pipes. Your water is also more likely to contain high levels if water pipes in or leading to your home are made of lead or contain lead solder. *Infants and children who drink water containing lead in excess of the action level could experience delays in their physical or mental development. Children could show slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities. Adults who drink this water over many years could develop kidney problems or high blood pressure.* *Copper is an essential nutrient, but some people who drink water containing copper in excess of the action level over a relatively short amount of time could experience gastrointestinal distress. Some people who drink water containing copper in excess of the action level over many years could suffer liver or kidney damage. People with Wilson's Disease should consult their personal doctor.* What should I do? Listed below are some steps you can take to reduce your exposure: Call us at the number below to find out how to get your water tested for lead and copper. Find out whether your pipes contain copper, lead or lead solder. Run your water for 15-30 seconds or until it becomes cold before using it for drinking or cooking. This flushes any standing lead or copper from the pipes. Don't cook with or drink water from the hot water tap; lead and copper dissolves more easily into hot water. Do not boil your water to remove lead or copper. Boiling water makes the lead and copper more concentrated because it remains when the water evaporates. What is being done?
