Black Powder on Kent Color Meter at Elyria, Ohio
A black powder appeared on a Ken Color Meter located at Elyria, Ohio. It waa feared that this powder might contaminate the Item Tinting bases or that It might here resulted from excessive wear In the machine. An analysis of the powder was requested to aid persomel in the Emulsion Laboratory to determine the cause of the powder and its probable effects.
The black powder Is primarily a magnetic iron oxide com pound or mixture. No carbon black la present. The source of the black powder may have been spilled Iron blade plgmant, ouch as S-W Code 7150, or friction products which resulted from wear on stool parts in the item Color Meter*

A black powder appeared on a Ken Color Meter which was in use at the Cashier Products Plant* It was feared that this powder might be Ken-Tint Black which would tend to contanlnate the other tinting bases contained in the machine. Hence, an analysis of the powder was requested*
The powder la primarily a magnetic iron oxide compound or mixture* Only minor portion of the black powder could be lamp black from Ken Tint Black spillage* Magnetic iron oxide, Fes04*lHa0, is used tgr S-W (Code 7150 dry) eg a blade pigasot for paints* How ever, it is possible that a similar oxide mixture could here been produced by wear of steel parte la the Kan Color Meter*

Lead Content of Super Ken-Tone Peelings
A user of Super Ken-Tone reported that a celling coated with this paint was peeling* This customer desired to know whether his two smell children could be poisoned by this paint* A small sample of the peeled paint was submitted with the request*

The lead content of the paint peelings is 0.03 % - 0.0tt %.
According to the American Standard Specifications to Minimize Hazards to Children from Residual Surfsee Cosily Materials**sponsored by
American Academy of Pediatrics, approved February l"6, 1955, by die American Standards Association, Inc.:
"A liquid coating material to be deemed suitable, from a health standpoint, for usa cm articles such as furniture,
toys, etc. or for interior use in dwelling units where it might be chewed by children ahall not contain lead com
pounds of which the lead content (calculated as Fb) la la excess of 1 psr cent lead of the total weight of the con tained solids (including plgaaata and drier)."
The lead content of the paint peelings than, of course, is only U par cent of the aaovnt that is listed in die above standards.
The lead content of the paint peelings was determined by means of x-ray flnoreaesnes speetrogrsptay. A ehodeal determination of the lead content would be time-coneusing and expensive. Also,
chemical analysis would destroy the sample. In ease something were to go wrong in die analysis, there would be no wple left to analyse,

Poor Adhesion of Ken Cati-Coat
The West Virginia Pulp and Pqpar Ccmpacy had uaed Sam
Cati-Coat in painting their plant. In ons section of the plant the paint film did not hold 19 as wall as It should. It was tbs sus picion of ths Technical Service Department that tbs paint failure
was dus to ths presancs of uroa on ths wall. The Analytical Research Department was rsqusstsd to chock the surface of this paint film for urea.
Urea was found on die surface of ths paint chips submitted for analysis.
