Dear Leila,
America's air is getting cleaner and cleaner - and natural gas is a big reason why. The chain of events goes something like this: technological advances unlock previously inaccessible natural gas reserves; clean, affordable and reliable - natural gas becomes the leading fuel for electricity generation; U.S. carbon emissions drop to 25-year lows.
The United States is the world leader in cutting carbon, due primarily to greater use of clean natural gas. But that's not all. The combination of natural gas, cleaner motor fuels and technological innovations are improving air quality in numerous ways - all while the U.S. leads the world in producing and refining natural gas and oil. Take a look:
The combined emissions of six key air pollutants dropped 73 percent between 1970 and 2016
even while there have been increases in GDP (up 253 percent since 1970), energy consumption (up 44 percent) and vehicle miles traveled (up 190 percent).
New cars, trucks, SUVs, and even heavy-duty trucks and buses are roughly 99 percent cleaner
than vehicle models of the 1970s, in part due to cleaner fuels, according to the EPA.
We're producing natural gas at record levels - up more than 51 percent between 1990 and
2015- yet EPA data show that natural gas system methane emissions decreased 16.3 percent during that same period.
I ncreased use of domestic natural gas has helped reduce ozone concentrations in the air by 17
percent since 2000.

The facts show we don't have to choose between energy security and economic growth on the one hand, and emissions reduction on the other. In reality, natural gas is the key partner for growing renewable energy sources, providing power when intermittent sources aren't available. Even under optimistic scenarios for renewables, government projections indicate natural gas and oil will supply an estimated 60 percent of U.S. energy needs in 2040.
