ASBESTOS EXPOSURE: OEM GRINDERS
Summary
On March 18, 1981 the writer conducted an asbestos
J" ; l 2n .the Pri y d secondary brake pad o n l r S d e r e
i d i U rX i i 0n P" ducts Building. Results of the survey ncu* 3 that employee exposures are within the allowable

Discussion
T Nordvi
?i-,!naly8i! of the s<unPl* one employee,
at thedpEL
5Z?' wa* fun<S to have a short-term exposure
t the PEL cf 2 fibers/cc air, although his time-weighted averaae
exposure was below the PEL. There arl two factors S i S h cln 9
biiiairhthl# *xposu" l*yel`. As bhe. brake rpads come off the ' belt, the employee inspects each one for defects. When a suf-
fl5leUt q!fant^ty of pads has accumulated, he aligns all the pads by slapping them together on the work platform. The inspector then transfers the brake pads to the shipping carton. Puring this process the inspector dislodges loose K f f i t S

pad' thereby, increasing his asbestos expo
sure level. The second reason is inadequate use of the
ventilated inspection area on the work platform. The
i?i?eiw0rSuhaw* a t8ndency to work away from the ventilated area thereby by-passing any usefulness of the existing
ventilation
*
In order to keep the asbestos exposure to a minimum, the
rS* 2 $ - ^ * ventilated work areas must be mandatory at all times, in addition, inspectors should be instructed on proper handling oi the brake pads so as to minimi* any dislodging of loose asbestos fibers.
. _In *ccrdnce with the memorandum of R. D. McIntosh, M.D.
Sattelmeier (Inter-Company correspondence of July 3, 1979) all three employees are required to have annual medical examinations.
