It was realized that if the vast amount of property moth in the area was to be protected, and if the agricultural lands were to be drained, some action had to be taken. For such a condition creates a definite flood menace, and it also waterlogs the lands of the rich valley so that they are unfit for cultivation. Each year the farming area has gradually become smaller, until today less than 40,000 acres of the 12.5,000 once subject to irrigation and culti vation arc tillable. But this waterburdened land is not the result of 1 the floods alone. Seepage is depleting the amount of irrigation water for the few acres that remain under cultivation. Work now under way consists of excavatingdrainageditchcsand build ing riverside levees. These l<wee$ are ten feet high, ten feet across the top and fifty feet at the base.
