Such applications require careful engineering. MISCELLANEOUS APPLICATIONS UNDERGROUND CONDUIT MUNDET DRI-MAG INSULATION MUNDET ASPHALT MASTIC PRIMER AND CEMENT MUNDET "7M" ASBESTOS CEMENT Central stations producing steam for distribution to many surrounding areas should use an efficient underground tile conduit system. All such jobs are specially engineered with a choice of several systems depending upon the soil conditions encountered. Many years of experience prove insulated pipes enclosed in tile underground conduit maintain permanence and continued efficiency. Basically this insulation has all of the insulating characteristics and other properties of 85% Magnesia. But in addition is treated to withstand water conditions. When in service and flooded with water will remain in original condition and dry out without damage. Should be used any where that a good insulation is required in the presence of water. Many sundry products are required for the proper application of cold insu lation such as primers and mastic coatings made of asphalt basis. Water proof paints, cements, seam fillers and puttys are also available, in fact all accessories materials to a cold-storage job are available in Mundet's line of insulation products. For general use on heated metallic surfaces and over insulating blocks the most general and acceptable type of plastic finish is regular mine run asbustos fiber. This is good for temperatures up to 1000F. It can be used as a finishing cement with a-mixture'of Portland Cement with it. Covering capacity about 20 board feet per cwt. A product for all-around service with other insulation materials. ,-` CUSTOM MOLDED 85% MAGNESIA INSULATION .*' - '.vM PRINCIPAL ADVANTAGES Mundet "Custom Molded" 85% Magnesia is composed of pure magnesium carbonate (4MG Co3, Mg (0H)3, 5HiO) and selected long asbestos fibers. The crystalline structure of microscopic dimensions entraps a large amount of air, provid ing a barrier that results in a high degree of insulation efficiency. Asbestos fibers are dispersed throughout the mass, which results in great structural stability. 85% Magnesia is available in sectional and segmental pipe covering form and in flat and curved block form for surface temperatures to 550 F. Under certain prescribed conditions it may be used for tem peratures to 600 F. PROVED DURABILITY . . . Mundet 85% Magnesia should be considered on the basis of the only true measurement of insulation value; its capacity to serve at highest insulating efficiency over a long period of years - perhaps even for the life of a plant. When exposed to alternating heating or cooling, it does not crack, spall or undergo structural changes that might affect insulating properties. It withstands mechanical shock and vibration within reasonable limits. LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.. . The following conductivity factors have been determined after tests of Mundet "Custom-Molded" 85% Magnesia pipe covering made by recognized independent research laboratories, confirmed by gov ernment laboratories and constantly checked in the manufacturer's own research laboratories. mean temperature F 100 200 300 400 500 thermal conductivity (k) btu/hr/sq. ft./F/in 0.338 0.363 0.408 0.454 0.500 MINIMUM SHRINKAGE . . . When applied with each section butting snugly to the next, Mundet 85% Magnesia can be expected to remain in this form permanently. Shrinkage at maximum recommended temperature is so slight that there is no change in physical dimensions, therefore no loss of heat at butts or seams. (Linear shrinkage-24 hr. soaking heat at 500 F, less than 1%.) COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH . . . Mundet 85% Magnesia withstands heavy loads without fracture. To compress 1 Vi" block Ye" requires 75 to 80 lbs. per sq. in. load. HIGH DUCTILE STRENGTH.. . Modulus of rupture as established by recognized tests made by government and industrial laboratories is higher than required by. standard specifications. LIGHTER WEIGHT.. . Mundet light density type 85% Magnesia weighs only 11 lbs. per cubic foot Vz lb. Its light weight makes even the larger sizes and thicknesses easy for one man to handle, thus simplifying and speeding application. PRECISION PIPE FIT.. . Controlled manufacture assures production, to tolerances of thousandths of an inch. Simplified thickness standards of prime sizes and thicknesses are intended to reduce the number of standard sizes and thicknesses of covering required for individual selection. (See table, page 3.) EASE OF APPLICATION . .. It cuts or saws easily and cleanly, even without canvas support, thereby reducing application time. Blocks score clean and because of the ductibility can be fitted easily to the contours of irregular surfaces. FORM CMM 857-2'/iM 2ND PTG 2 5.' 33 EXPERIENCED, NATION-WIDE INSULATION SERVICES ... Mundet 85% Magnesia Cement provides an efficient insulation where heat surfaces are irregidar and do not permit application of a preformed type of insulation. It is used for insulating fittings, for filling seams between insulation and for pointing up and surfacing after magnesia blocks have been applied to tanks, ves sels, etc. It may be used for temperatures up to 600F. Mundet Magnesia Cement is designed for utmost effi ciency rather than for finishing. For a hard permanent finish, it requires the use of a combination of Asbestos and Portland Cements. Magnesia Cement is mixed with water to the proper consistency anti can be easily and smoothly trowelled over the surface to be insulated. The conductivity of Mundet 85% Magnesia Cement averages approximately 10% higher than magnesia pipe covering and blocks due to the higher density of the cement upon application. MUNDET "CUSTOM-MOLDED" 85% MAGNESIA PIPE COVERING Simplified thickness standards of prime sizes and thicknesses are intended to reduce the number of standard sizes and thick nesses of covering required for individual selection. By slightly varying the wall thickness, every size and thickness will exactly fit over or into another standard size and thickness. This permits a great many unusual assem blies in addition to those shown on the chart. Usually the variations in wall thickness are plus, but the minus cases are more than compensated for by the higher insulating value of Mundet light density type 85% magnesia. notes applying to table 1. The advantage that anti-sweat has over ordinary woolfelt is the inclusion of several water resistant mem branes within the body of the pipe covering. Mundet Anti-Sweat Insulation consists of a liner of asphalt saturated felt followed by the required thickness of specially processed woolfelt paper. Two additional layers of saturated asphalt paper are then inserted in the center of the construction followed by an additional thickness of the woolfelt, and finally two layers of asphalt saturated felt on the outside under neath the canvas jacket. The outer layer has a lap extending about three inches over the joint. In thicknesses V2" and %" the pipe covering is made in single layer construction. In thick nesses of 1" and up it is made in telescopic construction to permit the outer layer being rotated over the inner layer thus preventing any open seams or joints in the pipe covering. Packed in cartons with bands for application. ilSP mmv iX-" vw-. View shows special double layer construction of ANTI-SWEAT insulation MUNDET CORRUGATED ASBESTOS PAPERS The single sheet of i/4" corrugated asbestos paper is supplied in rolls containing 250 sq. ft. 36" wide. In this form the sheet is as flexible as a layer of paper and can be wrapped around furnace pipes and warm air ducts. Each roll weighs about 50 lbs. AIR CELL INSULATION: Temperature limit 300F. continued ... This same cellular type of insulation is also made in sheet or block form for use in covering tanks, boilers, furnaces, drums, driers and other such flat and curved surfaces. Furnished in thicknesses of 3/4" to 4" in increments of 1/4". Standard sizes 12", 18" and 36" wide by 36" long. HAIRFELT INSULATION HAIRFELT is used on fittings or irregular surfaces as a cold insulation. It is also recommended for wrapping domestic water pipes to prevent freezing where low temperatures are maintained for a prolonged period and the water is not static. This hairfelt is made either by the platen or punched process. It is composed of 100% pure cattle hair densely felted together. The cheaper grades of hairfelt are also available which comprise a mixture of cattle hair and jute. The rolls are 6' wide x 50' long; also furnished 3' wide x 100' long and 3' wide x 50' long. MUNDET WOOL FELT PIPE INSULATION This type of insulation is used primarily to prevent condensation on cold water pipes and the damaging dripping from the pipe to warehouse, factory or cellar floors. It can also be used to keep water (either cold or hot) at a more constant temperature over long runs The efficiency of Mundet Wool Felt comes from a series of multiple laminations of specially processed felt. The name "wool felt" is descriptive rather than factual since present day for mulas have developed a far superior product --that gives improved efficiency and better work ing characteristics than the old paper with its high wool content. An inner liner of water-resistant paper prevents any condensation from penetrating into the body of the covering. It must be recognized that this covering, having no vapor barriers, can not be recommended for more than ordinary and customary conditions; such as, temperatures above 50F, humidity not in excess of 75% and ambient temperatures not over 85F. Mundet Wool Felt Pipe Covering is made in thicknesses of Vz", %" and 1". In thicknesses of 1" and greater, sections may be ordered in telescopic construction to provide means of applying so that there will be no seams in the covering that might permit the outside atmos phere coming in contact with the pipe. Greater thicknesses are obtainable but should severe con ditions be encountered, it is recommended that Mundet Anti-Sweat or some other type of insu lation be considered. Sections are 36" long; furnished with a cotton jacket and 3/4" wide bands. LOW PRESSURE STEAM HOT & COLD WATER INSULATIONS MUNDET CORK CORPORATION Insulation Division north bergen, new jersey MUNDET AIR CELL INSULATION: Temperature limit 300F. This has been one of the standard products of the insulation industry for covering heating and condensate pipes in residences, hospitals, hotels, office buildings and other types of com mercial buildings. While its conductivity is somewhat higher than other types of pipe covering, its use can be justified because of its low cost contributing to economy where temperature differentials are not great. Mundet Air Cell is made from selected grades of pure asbestos paper. A corrugated sheet with approximately a 1/4" high arch is cemented to a flat sheet. Each ply is wrapped around a mandrel of the required pipe size to form the thickness desired -- four plies to the inch. Either three or four ply is usually standard but any thickness from 2 ply-1/2" thick to 8 ply - 2" thick is obtainable. Finer corrugation 1/6" and 1/8" are produced to make 6 ply and 8 ply per inch respectively. . > .T Mundet Air Cell is made in 3 foot sections, either cotton jacketed or finished with plain white glazed paper. Aluminum bands 3/4"wide furnished in each carton. Closes Automatically--with locking "hinged action." Snug closure insures minimum heat loss or gain. Con densation avoided by appropriate jacket. This newly developed Mundet glass fiber pipe insulation offers these special advantages: 1. Manufactured in one-piece, full length sections which open easily and close auto matically . . . this feature speeds installation and reduces labor costs. 2. Mundet Superglas Pipe Insulation permits easy cutting and fitting of the inside diameter to conform to irregularities common to pipe line systems, such as couplings, unions, reducers, etc. ' This pipe insulation is made from longer, finer glass fibers, made possible by the latest research and technical developments. These insulations are for use from 600 F to 1900 F. To withstand this service over long periods of time, the composition has been selected especially to favor resistance to high heat for maximum efficiency. It is therefore recommended that these products be applied with multiple layers; the high temperature insulation used for the inner layer to reduce the temperature on the outside surface to a point where the more efficient insulation can be applied in the outer layer. To accomplish the desired results under certain conditions, three or more layers may have to be used. BROKEN JOINT CONSTRUCTION The two or more layer application suggested above is generally referred to in the insulation industry as "Broken Joint Construction" since it permits all seams, longitudinal as well as butt seams, to be staggered. This prevents any air coming in contact with the hot pipe. It is a necessity on high temperatures from 750 F up to counteract the effect of larger gaps occurring between sections due to the difference between the coefficient of expansion of the metal pipe and the insulation. The metal expands at a higher rate than the insulation. TRIACA1ITE INSULATION For all High Temperatures up to 1200 F. This is the latest and most modern of all high temperature molded insulations. Its range of efficiency makes it useful for temperatures at 300 F as it does at 1000 F or 1200 F. It may or may not be used as an inner layer with the efficient 85% magnesia used on the outside as indicated by the requirements of the job or the desired economy of application. Mundet "Tri-Calite" is a hydrous calcium silicate with asbestos fibers added to provide better flexibility and working characteristics. It is lightweight, strong and efficient. It is chemically inert and will not cause corrosion to ordinary steel or iron surfaces. Made in flat blocks 6" x 36" and 12" x 36" -- in thicknesses from 1" to 3". Also in pipe covering formsectional up to 18" x 2" thick and curved segments for pipe sizes up to 33" O.D. A major advantage provided by "Tri-Calite" is the unique manner of cementing the calcium silicate inner layer into an 85% magnesia outer layer. This combination is available for all pipe sizes and thicknesses in which these products are made in sectional form. Application on pipes is speeded by the use of a single layer material on pipes carrying temperatures above the 85% magnesia range; the highest efficiency is obtainable by combining magnesia with its very low conductivity factor with the excellent insulation value of the higher temperature "Tri-Calite;" warehouse stocks can be reduced by carrying this combination prod uct that covers a range of temperatures up to 1200 F. No higher price is charged for this combination covering, named "Trica-Mag," than for a comparable thickness of the individual layer. This combination, called "TRICAMAG", is available for all standard pipe sizes and thicknesses. 1 Tri-Calite insulation blocks are made in stand ard sizes, 6" x 36"; thicknesses 1" to 3". The wall thickness for each type varies according to the pipe or tubing size. The economic thickness required for any given installation is that thickness that will reduce to the minimum the sum of expense due to the heat passed through it plus the expense of preventing the heat losses. For temperatures below --25F, we design a Special Wall Thick Covering (Class D) for each specific job. Go vernment Mundet "Jointite" 100% Pure Cork Pipe Covering and Fitting Covers, meet all requirements of United States Government Specifications. Finish to be either as in Specification I or Specification III. Form CPC-2M-11 /56 COMPARATIVE HEAT LOSSES Transmission in B.T.U.'s per hour, per deg. F. diff. per lineal foot How to use table To determine the loss on 400 feet of 3-inch bare pipe, based on a temperature difference between the pipe and the outside air of 90 deg. per day, multiply number of feet by coefficient by temperature difference by 24 hours. 400 x 1.948 x 90 x 24 = 1,683,072 B.T.U/s. Dividing this by 288,000 (B.T.U.'s per ton) gives 5.844 the tons of refrigeration lost per day. To determine the corresponding loss for insulated pipe substitute the coefficient for bare pipe with that of the contemplated insulation. The saving effected by the use of cork insulation is the difference between tons of refrigeration lost for bare pipe and that lost through cork insulated pipe. Nominal pipe size (in.)
