Also, chemical grouting is recommended in many instances. J-M's basic policy Is stated as follows: Repairing (or Replacing) Damaged Pipe AHTRR Installation Some engineers and officials believe that damaged pipe discovered during testing should be replaced with new material rather than repaired with such accessories us repair, clamps, etc- This is a policy decision which falls outside the scope and purpose of this manual. The purpose here is simply to present the various options available for repairing or replacing damaged pipe and to leave the selection of the repair method to those responsible for this aspect of the j ob . General 7-lethod of Repair The option to replace damaged pipe with sound material is always available, regardless of the extent of the damage to the pipe. However, a pipe length damaged extensively, such as being crushed or repeatedly bruised at various locations along the barrel, should be replaced with sound material. (1) Repairs Prior to Installation Section A, paragraph 2, line 6: Delete "unless it is used to enter or leave a manhole," and end sentence with "pipe". Section C, paragraph 1, lines 8 and 9: Insert "damaged" between "the" and "area" and insert "pipe" between "and" and "remachined" to read, "...mentioned, the damaged area should be trimmed off pipe reaachined." and Paragraph 2, line 1: Delete "when" and insert "for" Paragraph 2, line 4: Delete "be" and delete "seated" and insert "seat to read, "...ring will seat properly..." Paragraph 3: Delete entire paragraph and replace with the following: "Cuts, gouges, scratches, chips or scrapes located at points along the pipe barrel where the rubber ring is not to be positioned should be repaired by either field cutting and removing the damaged'portion from the pipe. The remaining sections may be reraachined in the field for use as short lengths or connections to manholes. Alternatively, a repair clamp may be used around the damaged secton. It should be noted that this type of damage need not be repaired if the depth does not exceed 0.25 inches or 20% of the wall thickness, whichever is less, and does not exceed 0.50 inches in width and does not exceed 2 inches in length." If the extent of the damage is greater than that specified above, the pipe must be replaced." Note that we have included a section of ASTM D2992 to indicate why this change is needed. 7- Page 4-27: right column* Add the following after paragraph (5) and before section "d" : "(6) The long term hydrostatic strength of the coupling shall be determined by one of the methods of ASTH D--2992 with the exception that all surfaces of the coupling shall be exposed to water during the testing. For this specification the long term hydrostatic strength shall be defined as the internal hydrostatic pressure that will cause failure of the coupling after 150 x 10 pressure cycles (by Procedure A of ASTM D2992) or after 100,000 h. of pressure applied continuously (by Procedure B of ASTM D2992). The minimum long term hydrostatic strength in pounds per square inch shall be 10 times the maximum numerical classification for which the coupling is manufactured. This test is considered to be a qualification test to establish the adequacy of the manufacturer's design.
