DuPont Statement on January 7, 2003, Letter from Ohio EPA Regarding "Air impacts in Ohio due to emissions of C8"
In a January 7, 2003, letter to Paul Bossert, Plant Manager at DuPont Washington Works, Ohio EPA Director Christopher Jones refers to "concern over ambient levels of C8, as predicted by air quality modeling of year 2000 actual emissions."
It is difficult to comment on Mr. Jones' statements because DuPont has not seen details of the work to which he refers. We have no information about the model used, the details of the emissions information used, or any other data taken into account. Our own modeling --conducted with USEPA-approved and recommended models, actual 2000 emissions, and actual plant layout data does not support the results predicted by the Ohio EPA.
DuPont Washington Works has installed equipment upgrades to reduce emissions, and on-site testing and analytical data support the effectiveness of the upgrades. From 2000 to 2002, C8 emissions to the air were reduced significantly. DuPont modeling for 2002 did not identify any receptors in Ohio with concentrations above the screening level established by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, a level that is more conservative (more stringent) than the workplace exposure limits. We look forward to discussing this in more detail with Ohio EPA.
DuPont continues to be confident that the presence of C-8 at the low concentrations detected to-date in the Mid-Ohio Valley is not harmful.
