Despite the aggressive marketing of other pigments, even by lead manufacturer* them selves, shipments of red lead have recoined reasonably stablej last year

Instead of thinking of nev materials first and lead as a last resort, design engineers are asking by the hundreds at the outset vhat lead can do for then.

We believe that the salvation of the Industry, far froa lying vith the development of nev products and markets alone, leans very heavily on aggressive and Intelligent marketing of existing products to take ad vantage of today's conditions.
Look at a fev examples. There is nothing nev In the use of lead la ceramics, but ceramics are finding nev applications every day. Lead must be kept a part of chose nev applications like porcelain enamelled aluminum and electronic cerrxles. The use of lead for vaterproofing is ancient, going back to Romar baths, but architects are Just beginning to lean heavily tovard reflecting pools, fountains and planters to give character to plain end slrple buildings. Lead vaterproofing must.be cade standard practice egalr^t the competition of mecbr&nes and other metals. Antlvibratlon pads have been used for nearly a half century, but as consciousness of the bad effects of vibration grows engineer* must be cade avare of the fact that lead can help them.
Automation in Induetry Is ever. Increasing. If battery power Is to get Its share of the huge materials handling market. Its advantages must be videly told. Recognition by engineers of the noise problem gives batteries a big selling point, Juet as it does the uss of lead for sound proofing.
These are Just examples. It seen* that the opportunities exist to expand our markets substantially and that ve have the products to do It. Vhat ve need la the ability to recognize theso opportunities as they occur and the courage and conviction to tell our story In the right vay to the right people at the right tine. We believe the Industry has made a good start In doing that.

2. Anti-VIbratIon Pads. An Interim report, pending the results of further research, was prepared from data developed previously by Lessens and Associates under contract vith ERP and printed In United quantity for distribution to Bombers and engineers vith Immediate design problems.
3- Lead Roofs. An eight-page brochure featuring four prominent lead roofs vhich have been maintenance-free for more than 25 years vas prepared and mailed to our list of ease 12,000 architects end contractors.
t. Battery Fover. A new tvelve-pogo brochura on lead batteries for various types of motive and portable power vas prepared for distribution In early 1963.

7. Annual Reviev. The annual review of the lead situation in 1962 was prepared and appeared In the February, 1963, issue of "Engineering and tuning Journal." Reprints were obtained for members and for answering Inquiries.
6. Rev Oevelo-incnts In Lead. The annual review of this subject was prepared and appeared In the April issue of "Industrial and Engineering Chemistry." Reprints were obtained for Denbers and for anevering Inquiries.
9. Roofing. In cooperation with the H. Y. Tices editors, an ortlcls on the new lead roof of Ecw York's Soldiers and Sallorc Monument was pre pared and appeared in the January 7 Issue of that paper.
10. Encycloncdlce. Sections on lead were prepared for Rclnhold'a Chemical Construction Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia of Engineering Materials and Proceeoes, American Oxford Encyclopedia, and Harper's En cyclopedia of Science.
11. "The Materials You Dry." This article 00 lead, prepared by L.I.A., was one of a series on materials published several years ago by the Nev York Purchasing Agents Association. Permission was granted to reprint this article in a book for the guidance and education of purchasing agents.

28. Laqulrles. A major function of the Association 16 handling the thousands of Inquiries received each year sis a result of our advertising and promotional activities. An accurate method of recording Inquiries aa to source, subject end number vas set up and started to function as of April 1, 1982. Natural 1 y the subject depends to a large extent on vhat subjects are emphasized In our advertising ard promotion. Hcvcver, the record gives us an excellent guide to the effectiveness of our various activities and in vhat subjects people have a real Interest.
The records shov that in the eleven month period from April 1, 19&?, to February 28, 1963, ve distributed 33,70** pieces of literature, either our ovn publications or reprints of others, as a result of inquiries. This vos about 2^ times the number of pieces distributed In 1961. To thin should be added more than 25,000 copies of our cvn literature 6ent In regular mailings and over 200,000 copies of "Lead." The most popular subjects vere sound attenuation, antl-vibratlon rads, roofing and flash ing and storage batteries vith over *,000 each, hut ceramics, corrosion, point, plumbing and radiation shielding vere also popular.
The records al6o Indicated that seme 7,500 Individual Inquiries vere procesocd, of vhlch 992 were of a technical nature requiring special treatment either by letter, telephone or personal call. Advertising vas the largest source of these Inquiries, vith press releases, "Lead," trade shov exhibits and telephone calls accounting for cost Of the rest.

29- Technical Seivlce Engineer. To fill a vacancy due to a resig nation, Robert Travis vas engaged as a technical vrlter and technical service engineer early In the year. With a background In both vritlng and physics at Antioch College, his experience Included vork vlth the Rational Bureau of Standards, International Tel. 1 Tel., and "Materials In Design Engineering."
30. Lead Abstracts. As a result of the agreccent reached In I96I for Joint financial sponsorship of a lead teclmlcal abstracting service by Lead Development Association of London, ERP, and L.I.A., about 900 copies of these monthly publications are being distributed In the U.8. The nailing list so far Is cade up primarily of L.I.A. neebers, engineer ing school libraries, and research departments of leading industrial corporations.
31. Work Roon. L.I.A. constructed a nev experimented, almeographlng, addressing and calling roon In Its offices using standard U. 8. Cypsua Vaughan vails 2 in. thick vlth 4-lb. sheet lead laminated under One face. Though the e<pjljcent Is noisy, sound transmitted through the vails Is no greater than through a standard in. gypsua block vail plastered CQ both sides end is giving satisfactory results vlth a saving in space.
32. Lead Roof. Considerable tine and several field visits have been devo-ted to the huge dome of Kresge Memorial Audltorius at Massa chusetts Institute of Technology. A leaky source of trouble since its erection, M.I.T. engineers are nov having It covered vlth sooe 60 tons of 6-lb. sheet lead by a novel netted devised by thea vlth codifications suggested by L.I.A.
33- Boise Control Report. Much tine vaa devoted to vritlng a man ual cn the use of leal for noise control boned 00 ERP reports. A draft vas circulated to the IDC subcommittee dealing vlth this subject but any publication has been put aside pending further evaluation of the market.

35. Pover Steering. Through L.I.A. efforts and after preliminary tests, the Seginav Steering Cear Division of Cuneral Motors ordered trial quant 111 c s of galena-loaded urothnne as a damping cccpouni for pover steering mechanises.
36. fYanklln Institute Test Foco. An evaluation of the occoustlc treatment of the lead-lined tc6t rocta ve helped design at franklin In stitute vas cade by Bolt Beronek and Hevoan. They found that the use of lead had cade about tvlcc the ieproveoent usually attributed to other methods of treating such rooms. The barrier vas tensed "fabulous" by BIH people In infornaliy discussing the results. A detailed report of the design and test results vas sent to members.
37- Prudential Boston Project. Considerable effort vas expended on the architects and engineers of the nev Prudential Insurance Co. com plex In Boston for vhlch slrable tonnages of lead-asbestos pads vero finally specified, sccac in novel applications.

13. Madison Square Carden. Intensive work with the architects for this project over railroad tracks at Penn Station, Kev York, resulted in specification of about 100 tons of lead-asbestos anti-vibration pads, the largest order of this kind known to date.

In cooperation vith the rational paint, Var nish and Lacquer Association approval vas obtained froo the Food and Drug Administration to drop front panel palsen labels froo lead-containing paint by satisfying then that lead paints are not poisons under the Fed eral Hazardous Substance Labeling Act.
h6. Milwaukee Lav Suit. This case which alleged that a tenant got lead poisoning fraa drinking water In an apartment building vas finally settled out of court, after dragging along for several years, with a cash payment on a nuisance basis without prejudice. L.I.A. had been ca Interested by-stander and had given assistance In gathering facts for the defense.

It Is cocpoced of about a dozen representatives of members, about half of vhea are medical nen and the rest Industrial hygienists. An organi zation meeting was held in Kovember.
52. Study of Particulate Lead In Air. A research proposal for this study vas approved and placed at Stanford Research Institute, getting under vay In August. This study, scheduled for completion In eighteen months, la designed to Identify and measure the form end size In which lead exists In urban atmospheres, In order to aid our understanding of pjotentisl health effects free air pollution. This la Jointly financed by L.I.A.-E.R.P., Ethyl Carp., du Pont, and the American Petroleum In stitute, and la under the direction of L.I.A.'a Eealth end Safety director vho eervea as project manager.
53. Kettering Symposium on leal Toxlcolopy. L.I.A. agreed to be one of the sponsors cf this Symposium to be held In February, 1963, and the Executive Vice President accepted on Invitation to make the opening address on the "Importance and U6es of Lead." This Symposium van Jointly financed by L.I.A., Ethyl Corp., and du Pont.
5*>. Reprint. A reprint of the article "Antiknock Compounds and Public Health" prepared by Dr. Robert A. Kehoe of the Kettering laboratory was circulated to the members. The article appeared in "Ethyl Beva," Kay-June, 1962.

56. Inforcatloa Bulletins. Seven inforcation bulletins vere cir culated to members during the year to fceep then informed of articles, literature and other development* relating to lead that might not othervlee come to their attention.
57 Statistics. The usual monthly statistical services for mem bers vere maintained and the Annual Statistical Rev-lev published. Also certain statistics and an introductory page vere provided for the Year Book of the American Bureau of Metal Statistics. Llkevise, statistics vere supplied for the year books of the Automobile Manufacturers Associ ation and the Association of American Battery Manufacturers.
58. Motion Picture. A shooting script of s motion picture to dramatire lead and its uses vos prepared by a professional producer vith the help of our advertising agency and staff. It vaa submitted to the Execu tive Ccrr-j ttec of the Industry Developcent Cccnlttee vhich expressed it* liking of the script but recocnended that no action be taken until it could be decided vhether this type of film or cce having to do vith a specific application should be cade first, lieanvhlle a reserve of $25,030 vaa set aside for the future production of this or acme other film.
59- European Trip. Taking advantage Of his speaking engagement at the International Lead Conference in London in October, the Executive Vice President toured Italy, Germany, Belgium and France, talking pri marily to manufacturers of various lead products, studying the pattern of European lead usage, and seeking facts and ideas that can be used to promote lead In the U.S.
Co. Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. David H. Borclna, vith the
Association since 193^, vas elected Secretary, succeeding Robert L. Zlegfeld in that position, and to the newly created p06t of Assistant Treasurer, by the Doard of Directors. Mr. Zlegfeld continues as Executive Vice President and Treasurer.
61. By-Lavs. Several nev amendments to the By-Lavs relating to membership classification and representation on the Board of Director* vere prepared and presented to the Board, vhich recommended them to the entire membership for adoption at the Annual Meeting.
62. Displays. Tbe background of L.I.A. 's nev exhibit used at trade shovs vas made of perforated 6teel colorfully coated vith lov-flrlng leaded porcelain enamels. Also in the L.I.A. offices s small combination room divider and planter has been constructed. The planter, at floor level, is built of colorful lead-glared brick lined vith sheet lead vaterproofing and is surmounted by an expanded aluminum room divider finished In colored leaded porcelain enamel.
