Mr. Clark is the brickmason referred to la our correspondence of January, captioned "Fotrooa Crucible Repair*". Sr. Richards discussed with Mr. Clark the problsas of working vlth asbestos and tbs protective meas ures to be taken but, apparently, be wanted outside advice. All oeabers of the brickmason erev working with asbestos bsva been told that dust-type respirators art available to them and are advised to use them. Mr. Clark uses his respirator at all tlaes when there is an ex posure to asbestos, but the others generally do not. This disturbs Mr. Clark, and he thinks that an exhaust system should he < to ventilate the building and that sene of the work should be done outdoors. We feel that these ideas are not impractical and our engineering group will study the best way of doing it. We would like to have your commits, particularly with regard to the possibility that some of the employee* could request periodic examina tions, possibly by outside specialists. , H. A. Clark Route 1 - Box 110 Rockdale, Texas 76567 Dear Mr. Clark: Present information would suggest that many of the varieties of asbestos may be associated with the occurrence of cancer in humans. There is insufficient information concerning whether one type would be more dangerous than another. It should be recognized, however, that many men who work with asbestos do not seem to be seriously affected in an adverse fashion, and do not develop any type of cancer. Nevertheless, since you do work regularly with asbestos, it would probably be advantageous to have your physician examine you from time to time, simply to keep an eye on things.
