(UPI) - The Michigan Depart ment cl Natural Reeourcea said Thuraday that "alarm ing" levels ol the Industrial chemical PCft have detected UTLaka Michigan trout. Other fish and bints have either died or eutferad reproductive failure. A DNR staff report, pre sented to the Natural Re sources Commission, said efforts to rid the environ ment of polychlorinated biphenyl had been largely Ineffective because the levels of the chemical have actually increased In some fish. DNR Director Howard Tanner said PCB damage to fish had reached such seri ous proportions that bis agency would begin pushing tor a total ban on the use of the chemical. The Lake Mlchtaan Taslc Substances Committee, with representatives from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, already has asked the U.S. Environmen tal Protection Agency to push for a nationwide ban on the use of PCB.
