The subject of separate meetings for the land group and the marine group was discussed* It was agreed that separate meetings for the group would be arranged in the future* 2 IDENTIFICATION OF COAST GUARD APPROVED INSULATION MATERIALS The Coast Guard, as per their attached letter, requested comments relative to- identifying approved materials* It was reported that the manufactures believed that marking of cartons would be sufficient* NIMA will discuss this subject further at their next T & R Committee Meeting. BUREAU OF YARDS It DOCKS SPECIFICATION The latest issue of this specification was discussed in detail. Inasmuch as time is of importance, it was decided that individual comments should be made prior to August 1, 1965, direct to: Pope, Evans S: Robbins 515 Wythe Street Alexandria, Va. Attn: R, D, Baker It was suggested that NIMA establish standard design conditions and thick nesses for low temperature pipe insulation, Mr, Barnhart reported that the T St R Committee was working on this subject* It was also suggested that NIMA establish criteria for sound absorption qualities of duct liners, FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS HH-I-558 and HH-I-559 NIMA reiterated its stand against the promulgation of these specifications in their present form, . . It was the consensus of those present that the specifications were not usable in their present form and would not be used by the various govern ment agencies, NIMA will request a meeting with GSA to discuss this subject further, GSA SPECIFICAT ION - AIR-CONDITIONING GUIDE 301-B It was reported that the specification had been revised deleting reference to NFPA Standard 90A, 3 FIBER DIAMETER IN MILITARY SPECIFICATIONS It was reported that at present there are 11 specifications referencing fiber diameter as a criteria, NIMA is requested to furnish answers to the following: 1. Is fiber diameter a necessary criteria in specifications, 2. If so, what are the ranges of fiber diameter to be used in the specifications. 3. How should fiber diameter be measured. (Microscopic or Air Flow Method) OTHER BUSINESS (a) It was reported that the program of specification upgrading now assigned to Mare Island, Calif,, is to be brought back to the Naval Boiler and Turbine Lab in Philadelphia, Pa, (b) It was reported that Federal Specification HH-1-521 contains reference only to mineral fiber blanket and batt insulation. Blowing wool is contained in new Federal Specification HH-I-1030. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted J, M, Barnhart. C, 20226 5946/164* 007/General 5964/164.009/General 17 June 1965 Mr, J, M, Barnhart National Insulation Manufacturers Association 441 Lexington Avenue New York, New York 10017 Dear Mr, Barnhart: During a meeting of the marine inspection officers from all parts of the United States last week, the question of identifying Coast Guard approved insulating materials was discussed, \ These approved materials are listed under 164,007 and 164,009 in the enclosed CG-190, It would be appreciated if you can canvass those members of the Association who are also listed as manufacturers of approved materials to obtain feasible suggestions for marking them in such manner that our merchant marine inspectors could identify the materials in the shipyard and while being installed on vessels subject to our regulations.
