II . VINYL CHLORIDE (OSHA PEL - 1 ppm, 8- HR TWA)
During the first quarter of 1993 there were 63 monitorings completed for vinyl chloride exposure (35 poly/28 dryer). Of the total monitorings, eight exceeded 1 ppm and 50 (79%) were below 0.5 ppm. These exposures are summarized below*

III. METHANOL (OSHA PEL - 200 ppm, 8-HR TWA) (OSHA STEL - 250 ppm. 15-MIN. TWA)
One pearl charge operator was monitored for short-term exposure while pumping polyvic and methanol into a poly. result was 153.O ppm.

IV. TETRAHYDROFURAN (OSHA PEL - 200 ppm. 8-HR TWA) (OSHA STEL ~ 250 ppm. 15-MIN. TWA)
One dryer operator was monitored for long-term exposure while cleaning ultrafiltration cabinets. The result was 500.00 ppm. The operator was wearing a respirator.
V. NUISANCE DUST (OSHA PEL TOTAL DUST - 15 mg/M3. 8-HR TWA) (OSHA PEL RESPIRABLE DUST * 5 mg/M3. 8-HR TWA)
Operators in the Compounding building and Dryer building were monitored for total dust (PVC) and respirable dust (unspecified).

VI. PEL EXCEEDANCE INVESTIGATIONS
Vinyl Chloride - On January 27, 1993 a recovery operator received a VCL exposure of 3.2 ppm without a respirator.
The recovery operator rinsed blend tanks, had an equipment opening on a compressor and removed strainer basket cleanings from the Poly Building. The operator assisted another operator on a leaking condenser flange gasket while standing near building ventilation system.
The cause of the exposure is unknown. Corrective actions may help to determine the cause.
Corrective Actions includes
A. S&E operator will monitor area while rinsing blend tanks.
B. Take area monitoring samples of dispersion strainer cleanings.
C. Both of the above jobs will require respirator protection until monitoring results are complete.
