TOXIC MATERIALS WITH DELAYED REACTIONS In response to your memorandum of January 2, 19'oS* I am submitting JO copieo of provisional lists of toxic materials manufactured or consumed at. the Chambers Works,- which have delayed physiological reactions. The tabulation is dLvided. into two sections, covering those materials v/hose effects are felt v;ithin 2^ hours, and these whose effects may not be apparent for extended periods of time. Toxic materials . which set without delay have been excluded. These lists were prepared in cooperation with A. L. Linch, Medical Divi sion, whose guidance and assistance are gratefully acknow ledged. I regard these licts as provisional for two reasons. First, they were compiled in haste; while they cover all of our critically hazardous materials, I have not audited their completeness. Additional candidates are still being sug gested by our operating areas. Second, there are marginal items which require further consideration before they can be classified. For instance, the relative hazards of benzidine, dlanieidine end tolidine as carcinogens are debatable; and 9oxe aromatic amines cause cyanosis at such a moderate rate that It is hard to cay v;hether their effects .are delayed or not. I plan to issue final lists in about two months' time. 168 in. N. M.
