PUnPOSE
In order to be prepared Co comply with Che Illinois Asbestos Emission Regulations which might apply to Che painc industry, lout Calcs used for Chicago Production were analysed for fibrous asbestos. The results of Chat analysis were reported in ADP-8635.
As Informed by Joe Thornton, there are actually fifteen different talcs in use la Chicago Production including Che four talcs analyzed. It was therefore requested that the presence or absence of fibrous asbestos in the additional eleven tales be determined,
CONCLUSIONS
Eleven additional talcs were analyzed by microscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. The results indicate that among the total of fifteen different talcs the following six are relatively clean.

Generally, the talcntfroa the same supplier have similar character
istics , Judging by the rJEulta of this analysis, the characteristics of the products of the s ix ' suppliers are ea follows
(1) Eastern Magnesia Talc (EM): Relatively clean talcs of fine particle size.
(Z) Whitaker, Clark and Daniels (VCD): Relatively clean talca, coarse particle size sometimes.
(3) United Sierra (OS): Uniform particle alze, some grades are clean talca, some grades ere contaminated with trenollte.

<4) Desert Ilinerals (DM): fine particle size with a email amount of trcmolite.
(5) New York Talc (NY): Contain* crystal needles of various longth9 and width, contaminated with creoiollce.
(6) International Talc (IT): Contains crystal needles and/or fibers, contaminated with asbestos,
RESULTS
The results of microscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis are listed
below Including the four calcs previously reported (ADP-8435). The
.sequence of listing la In accordance with their degrees of contamination.
The eix clean talce are listed first, the more contaminated ones ere
listed last. Talcs from ths sana supplier are grouped together if possible.
For the sake of simplicity, the initials of various suppliers are used In
the first colunn of the llet. One complete set of Polaroid microphoto
graphs Is attached to R. W. Scott's copy of this report. . They are
available to anyone who is interested.

... . It la noticeable that.the talcs from Eastern Magnesia are oil clean, while those from Desert Minerals and Bar York talc are all contaminated. The talcs from Whitaker, Clark and Daniels and United
Sierra may or may not be contaminated with tremolite.
Microscopic observations reveal the color, particle elze, and particle ohape. X-ray diffraction analysis give? the chemical compo
sition and crystal structure of the sangle. Materials of. different chemical composition and/or different crystal otructuro might look alike under the microscope.
