Jones May 15, 1972 Insulating cements required product line can be covered by two different types of products, namely 1) Thermal insulating cement (no cement) and 7/' 2) thermal insulating finish cement (has cement). ;L'n The thermal insulating cement mainly has two specifications to meet, which aSASIM C-195 and Mil-C-2861-D. The key requirements are: 1) Covering capacity wet of 50 bd. ft. per 100 lbs. of dry material 2) Drying volume shrinkage of less than 20 percent 3) Shrinkage at 1800 F. less than 37o and density of less than 30 lbs. per cubic foot. There are other required properties such as thermal conductivity, dry adhesion to steel, mechanical stability, compressive strength and corrosion effect on steel. Super Stictite was qualified for Mil-C-2861-D and Stictite was not, as it mainly failed dry volume shrinkage and mechanical stability tests. The main reason Super Stictite has been used was it is much smoother to feel and jobs requiring workers to use their hands in the material,, .this jaate- rial was supplied as we usually received complaints with Stictite when used this way. Prible May 18, 1972 Dear Frank: After our discussion Monday morning in regard to dropping and retaining certain insulating cements and finishes, I have dis cussed with Paul Jones the requirements for insulating cements and difference in their properties. Paul has summarized the requirements and some of the properties in his letter to me of May 15, 1972, copy attached. In summary. Super Stictite and 711 theoretically meet the requirements of the A.S.T.M. and the Mil specifications. Stictite does not meet this requirement. It is engineering's recommendation that the insulating cements and finishes to retain are as follows: Super Stictite 711 Utility Finish All other manufactured insulating cements and finished should be irrevocably discontinued.
