Changes to Table I ' The chairman reviewed the results of the recent letter | ballot which showed 14 in favor of not dividing the toxic classi fications, and 6 in favor of dividing them. The comments of those voting to divide were sent to the subcommittee March 14, except for Mr. Sparre*s comments which came in later and which were brought to the attention of the subcommittee at the March 22, 1968 meeting. The subcommittee then reviewed the March 14, 1968 draft of Table I which reflected the decisions made at the January 24- 25, 1968 meeting of the parent committee and recommended the following; i J l 2 a. By a vote of 4 to 1, the subcommittee decided to label aXl statements in the Instructions column as First Aid. b. By a vote of 6 to 0, the subcommittee decided to change the heading of the Instructions column from "Instructions in Case 0f contact or Exposure" to "instructions in Case of Ingestion, Contact, or Exposure". c. By a vote of 4 to 2, the subcommittee decided to delete "Mild Irritant, Eye" and "Mild Irritant, Eye and Skin" classi fications and to strike the word "Severe" from the "Severe Irritant, Bye" and "Severe Irritant, Eye and Skin" classifications. d. By a vote of 5 to 1, the subcommittee decided to adopt the following first aid instruction for the "Irritant, Eye" classifi cations "In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician", and to adopt the same instruction for the "Irritant, Eye and Skin" classifi cation to be followed by "Flush skin with water". e. By a vote of 6 to 0, the subcommittee decided to supply a first aid instruction for the "Toxic by Ingestion" classification to read the same as that for the "Highly Toxic by ingestion" classification. Two motions failed: a. By a vote of 4 to 3, the subcommittee decided not to change the Statement of Hazard for the "Irritant, Eye" classifi cation from "Causes Eye Irritation" to "(May) Cause(s) Eye Irritation", and not to change the Statement of Hazard for the "Irritant, Eye and Skin" classification from "Causes Irritation" to "(May) Cause (s) Irritation". b. By a vote of 4 to 3, the subcommittee decided not to provide a first aid statement for the "Irritant, Eye and Skin" classification reading "In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or akin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. For eyes, call a physician". Changes to Definitions The subcommittee recommended the following changes to the definitions in the April 1967 draft of Part I: 3 a. By a vote of 5 to 1, the subcommittee decided to change the definition for TOXIC SUBSTANCE (Ingestion) to read "A substance tjjat has a median lethal dose (LD50) of more than 50 milligrams pet kilogram but not more than 500 milligrams per kilogram of body height when administered orally to albino rats weighing between 2go grams and 300 grams each." The "500" is in place of '*1000"- b. By a vote of 6 to 0, the subcommittee decided to change the definition for TOXIC SUBSTANCE (Skin Absorption) to read substance that has a median lethal dose (LD50) of more than 200 milligrams per kilogram of body weight when administered by con tinuous contact for 24 hours or less with the bare skin of albino rabbits weighing between 2 kilograms and 3 kilograms each." The *1000" is in place of "2000". 3. Letter Ballot It was decided to send a letter ballot soon to the parent committee for a decision on the more important changes recommended above.
