Reading this account of a unique series of pioneering experiments is a moving experience. As happens so often, the lessons that were learned so arduously are now the generally-accepted facts on which our understanding of environmental lead toxicity is based. Thus, while the manuscript is an important and valuable historical record of human studies that could not be conducted to-day, the account is not appropriate for a journal concerned with the lastest advances in Toxicology and its cognate sciences. I regret having to make this decision, but it is inescapable. When you and I discussed publication, I had in mind a much shorter document. Having read it, I feel that nothing should be done to spoil this fine record of great work. Ideally, it should be published as an Historical Monograph, by the University of Cincinnati or the Society of Toxicology. Alternatively, it could perhaps be assured of a wider circulation as a Supplement to Food and Chemical Toxicology, for which Pergamon Press makes a special charge (a very rough guess would be $10,000).
